CAERNARVON — A Berks County man was arrested after attempting to attack his parents with a samurai sword on New Year’s Eve.

Around 5:36 p.m. Dec. 31, Cpl. John Scalia and officer Kyle Tranovich of the township police department responded to an incident at 16 Horseshoe Drive in the Pennwood development where a domestic dispute was taking place between 28-year-old Brandon Gramlich and his parents. The officers were informed that the parents were locked in their bedroom and their son was attempting to kick the door down and was armed with a knife, according to police.

When they arrived the of- ficers found that Gramlich had knocked the door down and was yelling at his parents, saying he was going to kill them. Tranovich said Gramlich was armed with a samurai sword at this time.

The officer commanded Gramlich to drop the sword, which Gramlich did before being taken into police custody.

Police learned Gramlich became violent after his parents informed him they would not allow him to use their car. Gramlich responded by damaging a bedroom door and first-floor living room, and also assaulting his father and knocking him to the ground several times, police alleged.

Gramlich was transported to Berks County Central Processing Center and charged with aggravated and simple assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, harassment and disorderly conduct.

He was arraigned at Central Arraignment Court and has been committed to Berks County Prison pending a court appearance, according to court documents.
