Boyertown girls rally past Pope John Paul II

BOYERTOWN — Kaitlyn Eisenhard scored seven of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter Saturday night as Boyertown rallied for a 56-46 victory over visiting Pope John Paul II in a battle of Pioneer Athletic Conference girls basketball playoff contenders.

Eisenhard also grabbed 10 rebounds and Kaitlyn DeHaven and Dee Terry scored 12 points apiece for the Bears (9-2), who won their sixth straight game.

Taylor Bearden scored a teamhigh 17 points — including four 3-pointers — for Frontier Divisionle­ading Pope John Paul II (4-1, 8-2).

Ellen Chernaskey scored 13 points for PJP, which went 6-for-12 from beyond the arc and led 39-37 after three quarters.

Methacton 63, Pottstown 18: Kelsey Watson had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Jenna Carroll had 12 points and 13 boards to power the Warriors past the Trojans in PAC-10 action.

Sarah Sherman scored 10 points for Methacton (3-2, 9-3), which opened up a 35-7 halftime lead in bouncing back strongly from Thursday’s 66-65 double-overtime loss to Boyertown.

Alicia Rosenberge­r led Pottstown (0-5, 1-9) with seven points.

Owen J. Roberts 49, Phoenixvil­le 48: The Wildcats used a fourth-quarter comeback to erase a game-long deficit and score a narrow victory over the Phantoms in PAC-10 play.

Nikki Testa and Taylor Evans each had 10 points to lead OJR (1-4, 4-6), which trailed its guests by a 4137 margin prior to a fourth quarter it won by a 12-7 count.

High scorers for Phoenixvil­le (23, 4-7) were Nomi Washington and Aubree Flagg with 11 and 10 points, respective­ly.

St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) 52, SpringFord 39: Shelby Mueller scored 12 points and Maggie Locke scored 10 points, but the Rams (8-2) fell in the final game of the Under Armour Philly/New York Challenge at Lower Merion.

Perkiomen Valley 42, Bethelehem Freedom 20: Mikki Guiton scored 12 points to lead the Vikings to the nonleague win.

Katie Armstrong scored nine points and Lauren Leonard and McKenna Kohler scored seven each for Perkiomen Valley (6-4), which won its fourth straight.

Hill School 46, St. Mary’s 41: Deanna Mayza netted 22 points as the Blues returned from break with a non-league win.

Hilary Yoh scored 11 points and Sara Graham scored nine points for Hill School, which evened its mark at 6-6.

West York 53, Daniel Boone 31: Cari Lankford poured in a game-high 22 points to lead unbeaten West York past the Blazers in a non-leaguer.

Kelly Howiszak scored 13 points for Boone (3-7).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Phoenixvil­le 56, Owen J. Roberts 54: Marcus Howell scored a teamhigh 22 points and DeAndre Gadsden hit the go-ahead basket in the fi- nal minute as the Phantoms held off the Wildcats in a PAC-10 nailbiter.

The Phantoms (3-2, 5-5) overcame a 34-point barrage by Wildcats standout swing man Matt Crider.

Owen J. Roberts (0-5, 3-8), which also got 11 points from Sean Kent, took a 36-29 lead to halftime, but Phoenixvil­le held the Wildcats to just 18 second-half points.

Gadsden (16 points) nailed an 18-footer from the baseline to break a 53-53 tie with 50 seconds left, then Ian Harrigan went 1-for-2 from the foul line with eight seconds to make it 56-54 before the Wildcats missed a shot in the closing seconds.

Methacton 67, Pottstown 62: Brendan Casper led the way with 27 points and 12 rebounds as the Warriors held off the Trojans in PAC-10 play.

Matt Forrest scored 17 points and Sean Mann scored 10 points for Methacton, which improved to 5-0 in the league and 10-1 overall.

The Warriors trailed 30-26 at the half, but turned things around with a 24-12 third-quarter run.

Tyler Hunsberger scored a teamhigh 14 points for Pottstown (2-3, 3-7), which also got 12 points from Bryant Quill, 10 points from Steve Steinmetz and Antonio Moore and nine points from Denzel Harvey.

Pope John Paul II 56, Boyertown 53: The Golden Panthers had to work back for a regulation-time tie, then go through two overtime periods against the Bears before prevailing in this PAC-10 contest.

Jamel Stinson kicked in with a game-high 25 points for PJP (50, 9-3), which went into the fourth quarter trailing by a 32-28 count — due in part to a 16-0 run Boyertown (2-3, 3-8) mounted in the third. The teams were all even in regulation (4141) and the first OT (47-47) before the Panthers took the second, 9-6.

High scorers for the Bears were Ryan Corcoran and Mike Mansur with 19 and 18 points, respective­ly.

Perkiomen Valley 50, C.B. West 39: Rasaan Stewart scored a teamhigh 14 points to lead the Vikings to the non-league win.

Steve Leonard (11 points) and Mekhi Clemons (10) also hit double figures for Perkiomen Valley (5-6), which broke open a 17-16 halftime lead.

Hill School 52, St. Mary’s 35: Bryce Allen had 12 points and Sam Norton had 11 points to help the Blues take the non-league win at Annapolis, Md.

Joe Pucci had nine points and seven rebounds and Grant Smith scored seven points for the Hill (5-5), which opened a 26-18 halftime lead.

Quakertown 44, Upper Perkiomen 35: Trailing by a 12-2 count after one quarter, the Indians were unable to recover and fell to the Panthers in non-league play.

The loss by UP (3-7) negated a big scoring effort by Joey Marinelli, who hit for 19 points as one of only two players in the game to reach double figures.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Ursinus 65, Johns Hopkins 64 (2OT): Junior guard Ryan Adams converted a layup with eight seconds left in the second overtime as the Bears escaped with the Centennial Conference victory.

Adams finished with 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting to help the Bears improve to 4-2 in the conference and 6-7 overall.

Freshman guard Malik Draper scored a team-high 17 points for Ursinus, which also got 13 points from junior point guard Jesse Krasna.

George Bugarinovi­c and Jimmy Hammer scored 13 points each for Hopkins (3-3, 7-6).

The Bears play host to Gettysburg Tuesday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

DeSales 60, Ursinus 40: Sondrine Glovas scored a game-high 23 points as the Bulldogs took down the Bears in a non-conference tilt.

Freshman guard Alyssa Polimeni had a team-high 10 points for Ursinus (6-5).

DeSales (7-4) took the lead for good with 10:23 left in the first half as freshman guard Gabby Scott scored on a jumper to make the score 15-14. From there, DeSales would go on a 12-2 run to up the lead to 27-16.

WRESTLING

Biglervill­e Duals: A one-point loss to Saucon Valley was the lone blemish on an otherwise stellar outing by Spring-Ford in the Biglervill­e Duals. The Rams dominated Elizabetht­own (71-6), Kennard-Dale (51-21) and Wyomissing (47-6) in the early rounds — the setback to SV by a 3130 margin — before handling Pine Grove in the third-place match, 4918.

Sean Hennessey amassed a 5-0 mark competing at both 126 and 132, as did Josh Boyer at 285. Hennessey scored a pin and technical fall in the course of his day while Tyler McGuigan (170) had two drops.

Jon Cooper was 4-0 at 160, with Ryan Hayes (113), Matt Krieble (120), Adam Dombrosky (138), Mason Romano (195, 220) and Nick Perri (195, 220) all going 4-1. Krieble, Romano and Perri kicked in with two-pin performanc­es.

Octorara Duals: Bolstered by sweeps from three wrestlers, Perkiomen Valley made a 4-1 run in the Octorara Duals. The Vikings topped Sun Valley (45-24), Springfiel­d Township (61-12), Hatboro-Horsham (40-28) and the host Braves (4528), with their lone loss dealt by Interboro, 46-42.

Aaron Sturm went 5-0 at 138, as did Wyatt Gehman (152/160) and Nick Giangiulio (152/160). Gehman pinned all his opponents — two of them coming just under the one-minute mark — and Giangiulio scored four falls.

Omar Elghawy had a 4-1 record competing at both 170 and 182, with Ryan Patrick going 3-1 at 195.

Parkland Duals: Dante Steffenino went on a tear in helping Upper Perkiomen go 4-1 at the Parkland Duals. The Indians scored wins over Downingtow­n (54-18), Penn Charter (70-10), Exeter (51-19) and Pen Argyl (54-18), with their lone loss coming to the host team, 53-14.

Steffenino dropped four of the five opponents he faced in his sweep of matches wrestled at 120 and 126. Wolfgang McStravick had another

5-0 run at 138, posting a pair of falls along the way.

Going 4-1 were Dustin Steffenino (106), Kyle Fellman (145) and Casey Cook (195), with Dan Jordan (126) and Trevor Weeks each 3-1. Cook and Fellman had three-pin outings.

COLLEGE WRESTLING

North/South Duals: Ursinus posted a 5-1 mark, winning won three bouts, plus two more against a group of all-stars made up of the teams that traveled to Collegevil­le.

In the first round, Ursinus defeated Trinity (Conn.) 43-3, then knocked off West Chester 42-9. In the third round, Ursinus defeated Rhode Island College 35-7, then dropped a 16-15 decision to 30th-ranked Delaware Valley.

Ursinus posted two wins in two matches against top wrestlers from teams that traveled to the North/ South Duals by scores of 36-6 and 36-9.

In the Trinity bouts, Ursinus won the first nine bouts. Sophomore Christophe­r Donaldson started off with a pin in 1:05, followed by a forfeit win for freshman Danny Ventura at 133. After junior Elisha Gaylor won at 141 with a pin at 1:27, another forfeit at 149 awarded to sophomore Tyler Helms made the score 24-0.

Sophomore Richard Jasinski pinned Evan Robinson in 6:47 at 157 for a 30-0 lead, followed by a 3-1 win by senior Bill Reick over John Williams at 165 for a 33-0 lead.

Freshman Gnoleba Seri had a 15-6 major decision at 174, followed by a 3-2 win by sophomore Daniel Manganaro at 184 and a 7-2 win for sopohomore Christian Psomas at 197.

Against West Chester, Donaldson started with a forfeit, followed by a :27 pin for Ventura at 133 for a 12-0 lead. Back-to-back forfeits gave Ursinus a 24-0 lead, followed by a pin by Jasinski at 157 for a 30-0 lead.

Seri netted a 11-4 decision at 174, followed by a forfeit at 184 for a 42-0 lead.

Against RIC, Donaldson posted an opening major decision by a 13-4 score over Michael Sugermeyer for a quick 4-0 lead, with Ventura defeating Silas Murray 11-3 to make the score 8-0.

Gaylor took an 11-4 decision over Michael Murphy for an 11-0 lead, before Curtis Watkins dropped a 13-5 decision to Kevin Barrucci at 149.

Ursinus would then take the next five bouts as Jasinski pinned Alex LaBeef at 157 in 4:54, followed by a win from Reick at 165 5-3 over Robert Sotelo. A forfeit at 174 gave the Bears at 26-4 lead.

Manganaro had a 1-0 win over Adam Lynch at 184 for a 29-4 Ursinus edge, followed by a forfeit at 197 for Psomas.

The Delaware Valley match was a back-and-forth affair as Donaldson scored a 3-1 win at 125 over Charlie Frankel, who was an All-American from last season for the Aggies.

After David Davidson defeated Ventura 6-5 to tie the match, Gaylor earned a hard-fought 7-5 win over Dale Fava to give Ursinus a 6-3 lead. At 149, Emanual Ajabe defeated Curtis Watkins 10-1 to give the Aggies the lead back at 7-6.

At 157, Jasinski defeated Alec Horan, 7-3, followed by a 3-1 win by Reick at 165 over James Dugan.

Nick Della Fera defeated Hans Seri 3-1 at 174 for a 12-10 Bears lead, before Manganaro defeated Connor Gabriel 3-2 at 184 for a 15-10 lead.

The Aggies would take the final two bouts as Aar- on Karns defeated Psomas at 197 8-2, before Michael Boardman won the 285 bout 3-1 over sophomore Robert Scaramuzza.

In the first all-star match, freshman Bryan Carter and Scaramuzza picked up wins by fall, while freshman Nathan- iel Marsh had a major decision. Junior Taylor Gload freshman Christian Hoogheem, sophomore Tyler Helms, senior Michael Williams and junior Karch Connors all had wins by decision. Freshman John Morrison picked up a tech fall.

In the second allstar match, Christian Hoogheem and freshman Keven Hoogheem both had major decisions, Morrison and freshman Gabriel Gordon had wins by fall, while Keven Hoogheem and Williams had wins by decision.
