Boyertown Relay for Life cruises into town

BOYERTOWN — This weekend, members of the Boyertown community will gather at the Boyertown Area Senior High football stadium to celebrate cancer survivors and fundraise to combat the disease.

The sixth annual Relay for Life will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will last 24 hours.

Money raised will go directly to the American Cancer Society, with a large portion benefittin­g Berks County.

The 2013 fundraisin­g goal is $233,000. The event is free and all are welcome to attend.

The theme of this year’s Relay is “Movies.” Many activities are planned for the weekend including an opening ceremony and parade of 2013 Relay teams, a Fight Back Ceremony, an Advocacy Ceremony, a Survivor/ Caregiver Ceremony followed by a dinner, the Luminaria Ceremony, and a closing ceremony featuring the Boyertown Ceremonial Alumni Band. Additional­ly, at 12:10 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a live performanc­e of Children’s music by Michael Kropp, and at 3:30 p.m. there will be an Ellixon’s Tae Kwon Do demonstrat­ion.

A Sunrise Worship Service will be offered at 7 a.m. Sunday.

There are 45 teams already registered, but registrati­on is open throughout the event. The event is also featuring sign-ups for Cancer Prevention Study-3, which will take place between noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Parking will be available at Boyertown Junior High West with a continuous shuttle service running from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Handicap parking will be available at the high school.

The event will occur rain or shine, but in the event of inclement weather, activities will be moved inside the high school.
