Blessed Teresa wins CYO Region 18 title

The Blessed Teresa of Calcutta varsity softball team won its third straight CYO Region 18 Championsh­ip with a 7-1 win over Holy Family to cap off an undefeated regular season.

The Blessed Teresa of Calcutta varsity softball team won the CYO Region 18 League Championsh­ip for the third straight year, beating Holy Family 7-1. The Blue Angels also finished the season undefeated in league play.

Madison Dunn was the winning pitcher, striking out three in the win. Dunn had one hit and scored two runs. Grace Harvey also pitched well striking out six and allowing no hits. At the plate, Harvey was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Julie Cherneskie had two hits and scored a run. Haley Yerger had a hit and scored a run while Madison Lewis had an RBI. Marcella McCormick had a hit, Sabrina Neff had an RBI and scored a run while Rosalie Lucci had an RBI. Aubrey Majchrowsk­i and Gia Perrone both reached base safely. Jessica DeAngelo, Melanie Earl, Abby Peace, Lauren Luciani, and Abigale Oister played stellar defense for the Blue Angels.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta moves on to the Archdioces­e of Philadelph­ia CYO playoffs against other league champions.

Basketball

The Jaguars eighth grade boys basketball team, of Collegevil­le, captured the silver medal last weekend at the Rock Classic Basketball Tournament, held in New Castle and Hockessin, Del.

The Rock Classic showcases some of the finest talent from Virginia to Connecticu­t, according to Vinny LaSorsa, Executive Director of the Tournament and President of Premier 1 Events in New York.

The Jaguars battled it out from the opening tip of their first matchup, upsetting the Philly Blaze from Mt. Airy, 60-49. Team cocaptain Justin Adedinsewo, who has committed to attend and play this fall at The Hill School, paced the team with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Co-captain Ryan Hagan, headed for SpringFord, scored 10 points, had six steals, six rebounds, six assists and two blocks. Guard Chris White, who is headed to Pope John Paul II, also scored 10 in the opener.

The Jaguars then advanced to bracket play where they upset the highly favored Dream Chasers from Hampton, Va. 65-60. The Dream Chasers are run by basketball AAU legend Boo Williams and produced 76ers great Allen Iverson. Adedinsewo led the way with 22 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Josh Nguyen, also headed for Spring-Ford, drained four threes to finish with 12 points.

In the semifinals, the Jags once again scored an upset, beating the undefeated in bracket play and No. 1 seed Role Models AAU Program from Middletown, Del., 6450. Nguyen knocked down four threes and totaled 18 points in the contest.

The Jaguars then clinched the silver medal with a hard fought, 62-49, defeat against a big and strong Iron Saints AAU Club in the championsh­ip. Adedinsewo had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Souderton-bound Josh Dougherty hit three longdistan­ce jumpers and tallied nine points in the losing cause.

During the 2015 season, the Jags have also won titles at the Athletes for Better Education Tourney in Reading, the Competitiv­e Edge Easter Shootout in King of Prussia and the Lower Bucks Spring Showdown in Bucks County. The team also finished runnerup at The Ball is in Your Hands Shootout in Hillburn, N.Y., and reached the quarterfin­als at the Hoop Group Spring Junior Elite Showdown in Neptune, N.J.

Baseball

The Olivet Boys and Girls Club 13U RBI (Reviving

Baseball in Inner Cities) regional team captured the three-day Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament championsh­ip in Prince George County, Maryland, last weekend.

In Friday’s opening game, Olivet’s RBI team routed Pittsburgh 14-2, as well as North Jersey 11-1. In Saturday’s semifinals, Olivet’s RBI beat Baltimore, 2-1, then defeated Philadelph­ia, 4-1, for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament Championsh­ip win.

Scouts from the National Associatio­n, USA Baseball were present during the tournament prospectin­g for potential team players, and chose three of Olivet’s RBI players: Angel

Masters Track and Field

Ray Feick, of Gilbertsvi­lle, swept every event at the Mid-Atlantic Track & Field Champions last weekend at West Chester University.

Feick won the shot put with a 27-5, the hammer throw with an 87-11, the discus with a 77-3, the javelin with a 78-10, the 12-pound weight throw with a 38-3 and the 25-pound weight throw with a 21-11.
