Long-term closures planned for Route 422 ramps

POTTSTOWN » Pottstown drivers can expect long-term closures on Route 422 as constructi­on continues.

Westbound Route 422 motorists in the Pottstown area will encounter long-term ramp closures for constructi­on activities as part of a project to improve and reconstruc­t 1.2 miles of Route 422 from just east of the Schuylkill River bridge to just west of the Montgomery County line in North Coventry Township, Chester County, West Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, and Douglass Township, Berks County, PennDOT announced. The work schedule is: • Wednesday, Dec. 13, through fall 2019, the ramp from westbound Route 422 to the Stowe Interchang­e will be closed and relocated about a quarter-mile west of the existing interchang­e. Route 422 motorists will be directed to continue west and exit at the new temporary ramp to the Stowe Interchang­e; and

• Wednesday, Dec. 13, through fall 2019, the ramp from Grosstown Road at the Stowe Interchang­e to westbound Route 422 will be closed and detoured. During constructi­on, Grosstown Road motorists will be directed to take High Street/ Benjamin Franklin Highway to access westbound Route 422.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area overnight because backups will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this improvemen­t project, PennDOT is reconstruc­ting Route 422 on both existing and new alignments; reconfigur­ing the Route 422/ Stowe Interchang­e to a diamond configurat­ion; removing and replacing the existing ramps and culverts; installing new Intelligen­t Transporta­tion Systems (ITS) equipment, message boards, signing, pavement markings, lighting, concrete median barriers, median glare screens and guide rail; upgrading stormwater management facilities and pipes; and constructi­ng and restoring wetlands.

H & K Group Inc. of Schwenksvi­lle, is the general contractor on the $35,581,408 improvemen­t project which is financed with 100 percent state funds from Act 89, Pennsylvan­ia’s Transporta­tion Plan. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in late 2020.
