Long-term closures planned for Route 422 ramps
POTTSTOWN » Pottstown drivers can expect long-term closures on Route 422 as construction continues.
Westbound Route 422 motorists in the Pottstown area will encounter long-term ramp closures for construction activities as part of a project to improve and reconstruct 1.2 miles of Route 422 from just east of the Schuylkill River bridge to just west of the Montgomery County line in North Coventry Township, Chester County, West Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, and Douglass Township, Berks County, PennDOT announced. The work schedule is: • Wednesday, Dec. 13, through fall 2019, the ramp from westbound Route 422 to the Stowe Interchange will be closed and relocated about a quarter-mile west of the existing interchange. Route 422 motorists will be directed to continue west and exit at the new temporary ramp to the Stowe Interchange; and
• Wednesday, Dec. 13, through fall 2019, the ramp from Grosstown Road at the Stowe Interchange to westbound Route 422 will be closed and detoured. During construction, Grosstown Road motorists will be directed to take High Street/ Benjamin Franklin Highway to access westbound Route 422.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area overnight because backups will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under this improvement project, PennDOT is reconstructing Route 422 on both existing and new alignments; reconfiguring the Route 422/ Stowe Interchange to a diamond configuration; removing and replacing the existing ramps and culverts; installing new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, message boards, signing, pavement markings, lighting, concrete median barriers, median glare screens and guide rail; upgrading stormwater management facilities and pipes; and constructing and restoring wetlands.
H & K Group Inc. of Schwenksville, is the general contractor on the $35,581,408 improvement project which is financed with 100 percent state funds from Act 89, Pennsylvania’s Transportation Plan. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in late 2020.
