Vulkah named OW at first PJP tournament

Freshman Matt Vulkah was named Outstandin­g Wrestler at the inaugural Pope John Paul II Tournament Saturday. Vulkah was champion at 106 pounds.

Pope John Paul II had a solid showing in the inaugural Pope John Paul II Tournament, which ran from Friday night into Saturday.

Freshman Matt Vulkah was named Outstandin­g Wrestler after claiming first overall in the 106-lb. weight class. Also taking to the medal stand, junior Jack Files claimed second at 195, senior Nick Boyce finished third at 132 and senior David Delciotto was fourth at 160.

Abington won the overall team title while Upper Moreland finished runnerup. KNIGHT DUALS » Skylar McLeod dominated the 220-pound weight class in heading Pottsgrove’s 2-1 showing at the Academy Park Duals. The Falcons handled host AP 48-27 and Kennett 50-26 before being overtaken by Great Valley 39-30.

McLeod’s 3-0 day featured falls in each of his bouts. Josh Cerrito also went 3-0 with a pair of pins, and Isaac Hanna was also 3-0.

Co-ed swimming

HILL RELAYS » The Hill’s boys and girls teams both finished second to Germantown in their respective brackets. The boys tied Lawrencevi­lle School for second place.

The Hill boys won the 400 medley relay behind Michael Schiavone, Walt Lehneis, Alfonso Mestre and Yeob Kim; the 200 butterfly relay with Michael Wong, Robert Twombly, Quinton Tang and Kim; the 800 free relay with Lehneis, Matt Kenvin, Tang and Mestre, who pulled out the exciting come-from-behind win for his team; and the 200 free relay with Kim, Wong, Schiavone and Mestre.

The Hill girls easily won the 800 free relay with Paige Curcio, Sarah Wentling, Cassidy Beeding and Maddy Lewis; and the 200 free relay with Curcio, Maddie Green, Alex Zelinske and Paige Swartz.

Indoor track

URSINUS OPEN » The Boyertown boys’ distance medley relay and Perkiomen Valley’s Christina Warren and Cole Peterlin led a group of locals at the season-opening Ursinus Open.

Boyertown seniors Todd Barton, Dominic Derafelo, Josh Endy and junior Payton Stanziani impressed with an 11:06.10 to win their relay with second-place St. Andrews finishing 11:38.37.

Warren ran away with the girls’ 55-meter hurdles in 8.03, comfortabl­y ahead of runner-up Tia Taylor of Saint Basil (8.52).

Peterlin, the quarterbac­k of the PAC champion Perkiomen Valley football team in the fall, cleared 6-5 to win the boys’ high jump.

Owen J. Roberts’ Scott Honicker was second in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.78, trailing only Germantown Academy’s Kyle Garland (7.35). Spring-Ford’s Stephen Chapman and Methacton Alex Yablonski were 7th (8.18) and 8th (8.26), respective­ly.

Methacton was third in the 4x200 with Julie Byrne, Marina Daywalt, Amy Domenick and Camillie Dunham clocking 1:48.59. Boyertown’s Aurora Conrad, Emma Elwell, Kristi Kada and Lillian Mauger came in 7th.

Boyertown sophomore Christian McComb placed third in the mile with a 4:32.63.

In the boys’ 55 meters, Pottsgrove’s Ashon Calhoun was 9th (6.85) Perkiomen School’s Sunmakin Orafidiya 10th (6.86).
