Action needed to stop gun violence

- — Kate Yurick, MD Chester Springs

Someone needs to do something. I have said it for years. You have said it for years. Over and over, hundreds of times. And that only counts school shootings. Then there are the movie theaters, concerts, places of worship, workplaces, shopping malls…and that’s just the gun violence that makes the news.

Someone needs to do something. What about all the lives lost to guns that no one hears about? No one except those of us who are directly affected or working on the front lines. All those lonely souls, perhaps misguided, sometimes truly evil, all too often innocent. They perish on our streets, in our hospitals and in our homes several times a day. If I never see another gun shot victim it will be too soon.

Someone needs to do something. I am a busy mom with a busy career. I leave for work before my children are out of bed. I set an alarm each morning to remind me that it’s almost time for the school bus and call home just before they leave for school. I started doing this on Dec. 15, 2012. Just in case it’s the last time I get to tell them how much I love them.

We can do something. Without actively engaging to help develop solutions I feel complicit in society’s failure to protect our communities from gun violence. The wheels of bureaucracy are frustratingly slow, designed that way to avoid legislating whims and trends. But that means tangible change needs to come from we the people.
