Check out the art of Josephine W. Pennypacker
If you’ve never heard the name Josephine Pennypacker, you are not alone. Even frequent museum-goers can rarely name more than a handful of women artists. For centuries, women have largely been erased from the history of art. Excluded from art classes and gallery shows, women artists have always had to forge their own paths. While professional opportunities were beginning to present themselves to women in the nineteenth century, Josephine, the oldest daughter of Pennsylvania Governor Samuel Pennypacker, was never known to sell or show any of her work. In fact, only five of her pieces are confirmed to have been framed during her lifetime. Despite this, she managed to create a truly incredible body of work which stands up against any woman artist at that time.
On Sunday, May 13, at 1 p.m., visit Pennypacker Mills for an indepth exploration of the new exhibit “The Art of Josephine W. Pennypacker.” Follow the story of
Josephine’s life as you view this extraordinary collection of watercolors, drawings, and oil paintings. Compare her still life and landscape images against the reallife objects and photographs she used as inspiration. Get up-close and personal with the watercolor box she used to create these masterpieces. With over 70 pieces of her art on view through the mansion, this is the most comprehensive retrospective of Josephine Pennypacker’s work ever put together. The Gallery Talk will be held in the second floor exhibit gallery. There is no handicapped accessibility. Feel free to stay afterward to take a guided tour of the Pennypacker mansion.
