Hopkinson-Wood a contender for D3 golf title

“It’s an honor and a privilege to have received a bid to go as an individual,” HopkinsonW­ood said. “I can’t wait to not just represent Wittenberg, but my team as well. I am here because of the amazing support of the coaching staff, athletic administra­tion, friends and family, and, of course, my teammates. I’m hoping to just have fun and take it all in to end my collegiate career.”

Hopkinson-Wood is a fourtime North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year. She was medalist in the league tournament with a 54-hole total of 224 on rounds of 72, 72 and 80. It was the 15th time she’s been the low golfer in her career in a match and her second med-

alist honor at the tourney. She was also named NCAC Player of the Week on April 30 for the 20th time in her career.

“I am so proud of what Jane has accomplish­ed in her career and especially this season,” coach Michael Leotta said. “I believe she has been at her best both on and off the course this year and I’m really looking forward to seeing her compete and close out her career at the NCAAs.”

Hopkinson-Wood enters the tourney ranked third individual­ly in GolfStat’s computer player rankings. QUINN MCKENNA (SPRINGFORD) » The 6-foot-3 freshman outfielder was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on April 30 after a big effort the previous week for the 9-26 Lehigh baseball team. McKenna collected hits in five of the six games the Mountain Hawks played and singled in the only run in a 1-0 league victory over Navy on April 28 and collected his first collegiate home run in a 10-2 loss to St. Joseph’s on April 24. He’s played in 29 games with 19 starts and is hitting .271 (19-for-70) with five doubles and a triple to go along with his homer. He has 13 runs scored and 15 runs batted in. He hasn’t made an error in 40 chances. ALEX O’HERRICK (BOYERTOWN) » The senior was named PSAC Player of the Week on April 30 and was named to the All-PSAC second team last Thursday for her play with the Lock Haven women’s lacrosse team. O’Herrick earned the weekly honor after leading the Bald Eagles to a 2-0 week with five goals, three assists, 28 draw controls, six ground balls and three caused turnovers. She was named to the second team after scoring 51 points on 36 goals and 15 assists, winning 141 draw controls with 49 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers. The draw per game (7.7) is first in the PSAC and sixth in Division II. Lock Haven was beaten in the league semifinals 16-6 to West Chester last Friday and is hoping to earn an at-large berth to the NCAAs. AMANDA BUTERA (POPE JOHN PAUL II) » The freshman was named Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the MAC Freedom first team after an outstandin­g season with the Misericord­ia softball team. Butera led the Cougars in hitting (.415), home runs (nine), runs scored (40) and runs batted in (30). She had 61 hits in 141 at-bats starting all 41 games. She also stole 20 bases in 23 attempts. Misericord­ia finished 23-18 after being eliminated in the league tourney with a 9-3 loss to King’s last Saturday in Wilkes-Barre. JENNA TRYTHALL (POTTSGROVE) » The sophomore was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference second team in doubles after a big season with the Gwynedd Mercy women’s tennis team which finished 14-3 overall, 10-0 in league play and captured its fifth straight league tourney title with 5-0 victories over Summit and Immaculata and earn an NCAA Division III berth. Trythall and her partner, Nicolette Diaz of Franklinvi­lle, N.J., captured No. 3 doubles in both matches and Trythall won her singles match against Summit, 6-0, 6-0 and was leading 6-0, 5-2 when the Immaculata match ended. She is 11-0 in singles and 14-3 in doubles. ALEXANDER DOVE (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) » The junior was named Landmark Conference Player of the Week on April 30 after he helped the Susquehann­a men’s tennis team defeat Penn State Altoona 5-1 in rain-shortened match on April 28 in Selinsgrov­e. Dove finished the season with a 9-5 singles record, 5-2 at No. 1 and 4-3 at No. 2. He was 11-2 in doubles with two partners, 3-0 at No. 1, 7-2 at No. 2 and 1-0 at No. 3. The River Hawks saw their season end in a 5-0 loss in the Landmark semifinals to Goucher last Wednesday in Baltimore, Md. BROCK JOHNSON (BOYERTOWN) » The senior co-captain led the King’s men’s lacrosse team in points (40) and assists (22). He had 18 goals and picked up 33 ground balls to help the Monarchs go 6-9 on the season but saw it come to an end with a 15-5 loss to Misericord­ia in the MAC Freedom semifinals last Wednesday in Dallas. He was named to the all-league second team last Tuesday. Senior Shawn Dickey (Perkiomen Valley) had 25 goals and three assists for King’s. SAVANNAH TOTH (DANIEL BOONE) » The junior catcher and cleanup hitter was named to the MAC Commonweal­th first team after a big season with the Lebanon Valley softball team. Toth hit .374 (46-for-123) with 10 doubles, three home runs, 19 runs scored and a team-high 36 runs batted in. Behind the plate, she made three errors on 138 chances (.978) and threw out seven would-be base stealers. The Flying Dutchmen finished 20-16 after going 2-2 in the league tourney. Toth was 7-for-13 with a run scored and four RBIs in the four games. MATT MESSERLE (SPRINGFORD) » The senior was named to the Landmark Conference second team for his play in goal with the Goucher men’s lacrosse team last Tuesday. Messerle started all 17 games and gave up 136 goals with 177 saves, the latter the top mark in the league. The Gophers finished 10-7 overall and 4-2 in league play but saw the season end with a 9-5 loss to Elizabetht­own in the tourney semifinals last Wednesday in Elizabetht­own. Messerle had 11 saves in the game. MARIE VALENTI (BOYERTOWN) » The junior received a pair of honors last week with the Navy women’s lacrosse team, the Midshipmen 14-3 heading into the Patriot League Tournament. The 5-foot-9 junior was named to the Patriot second team for her play on the field last Monday and was named to the All-Academic team for the second straight year last Wednesday. Valenti is second on the team in ground balls with 39 and leads the team with 27 caused turnovers. Navy’s defense has held foes to 10 goals or less in 10 of 17 games. NOLAN GRABER (UPPER PERKIOMEN) » The 6-foot5, 225-pound freshman right-hander had a solid season pitching for the Ursinus baseball team, the Bears finishing 10-22-1 overall and 5-12-1 in the Centennial Conference. Graber had a 4-3 record and a 2.91 earned run average in nine games and five starts. In 43.1 innings, he gave up 40 hits and 18 runs, 14 earned, with seven walks and a team-high 30 strikeouts. In his final game, he pitched Ursinus to a 3-1 victory over Mary Washington on April 28 in Collegevil­le, going nine innings and giving up six hits, an earned run, with no walks and nine strikeouts.
