Smith’s late score lifts OJR past W.C. East

Sam Smith scored with 4.1 seconds left in regulation to lift the Owen J. Roberts boys soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference win over West Chester East on Saturday afternoon.

Smith’s score came off a feed from Josh Fonder and Gavin Zorn for OJR’s ninth shot of the game. Ryan Walker and Zeb Smith combined for eight saves in goal to preserve the shutout. SPRINGSIDE-CHESTNUT HILL 1, HILL SCHOOL 0 >> In a rematch of last season’s PA Independen­t Schools Athletic Associatio­n championsh­ip game, Philip Burckhardt converted a free kick in the 22nd minute to deliver SCH past the Blues.

The Hill finished with six shots on goal while keepers Alan Kim and Blake Groff had two saves apiece.

Girls soccer

SPRING-FORD 2, METHACTON0>> Scoring twice in a 20-minute span, the Rams blanked the Warriors in their PAC Liberty Division game.

Nandini Patel got the Rams’ first goal in the 49th minute, assisted by Ally McVey. Their second goal was scored by Ella Curry off Devin Rawley’s assist. OWEN J. ROBERTS 1, GARNET VALLEY 0 >> Sarah Kopec scored the game’s lone goal during the second half to lift the Wildcats to a nonleague win over the Jaguars. BOYERTOWN 1, WILSON 1 >> Natalie Vicari scored for the Bulldogs, and Samantha Goffice for the Bears, as they battled to a nonleague tie.

Ryane Bernstiel kicked in with two goalkeeper saves for Boyertown.

Co-ed cross country

PAUL SHORT RUN >> Naomi Hillen and Christian McComb headed the local contingent competing in the invitation­al at Lehigh University.

Hillen was the area’s top runner, the Pottsgrove sophomore placing fourth in the Girls White race with a time of 19:40. On the boys’ side, McComb was fifth in the Brown race, the Boyertown junior covering the course in 15:48.

In the girls Brown race,

Perkiomen Valley’s Delaney O’Sullivan was 31st in 19:50, and Owen J. Roberts’ Hannah Kopec followed in 38th (20:00). The girls’ White race saw Hill School’s Olivia Tullman place 13th (20:15), and Pope John Paul II had two Top 50 runners in Katy Todd (31st, 21:03) and Claudia Dolan (49th, 21:29).

The boys Brown race had three Owen J. Roberts runners — Linus Blatz (22nd, 16:27), David Brunton (31st, 16:37) and Matt Muthler (50th, 16:51) —

score high finishes. Matt Varghese (23rd, 16:24) and Tom Chimes (45th, 16:44) stood out for Methacton, Perkiomen Valley’s Tyler Clifford was 20th (16:24) and Spring-Ford’s John Zawislak 48th (16:48).

In the boys White event, Hill School’s Tucker Dunn was 43rd (17:31).

Field hockey

METHACTON 1, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 0 >> Katy Benton’s score in the first half proved the difference in this non-league matchup.

Benton finished a pass from Liz Chipman while Molly Frey came away with six saves in the cage to preserve the shutout for Methacton. East keeper Emily Bullard finished with four saves. OWEN J. ROBERTS 8, LOWER MERION 0 >> The Wildcats scored seven goals in the first half en route to a nonconfere­nce win.

Jenna Kirby assisted on OJR’s first three goals, finishing with four helpers on the day while Bridget Gallagher had a pair of goals and three assists. Julia Lamb and Maddi Koury scored two goals apiece while Natalie Fuertsch (assist) and Raina Smolij both scored once. Cayden Jarvis and Cait McGee came away with two saves apiece in the cage. HILL SCHOOL 4, SPRINGSIDE­CHESTNUT HILL 0 >> Alex Conway registered a goal and an assist in the span of 90 seconds to lead the Blues to a non-conference win over SCH.

Conway assisted on Logan Closuer’s goal during the second half, then picked up a goal of her own on an assist from Josephine Palde. Palde finished with a goal and two assists while Taylor Duffany rounded out the scoring with a solo tally. Hayley Gable earned the shutout in the cage with five saves.

Boys golf

METHACTON 181, OWEN J. ROBERTS 190 >> The Warriors’ Andrew Catania and the Wildcats’ Jack Murray both finished at 1-under 34 during their PAC semifinal match at Skippack.

Methacton’s AJ Thomas followed with an even-par 35, Nick Martin and Jason Rieger both finished at 37 while Dylan Lasecki rounded out the scorecard with a 38. Christian Brofft fired a 37 while Nick Massa followed with a 38.

Girls water polo

HILL SCHOOL 8, HAZELTON 6 >> The Blues came out strong against Hazelton, combining tenacious defense with a potent offense in this Beast of the East matchup.

Megan Mikuen was excellent in goal, making 10 saves and adding one assist. Co-captain Claire Alfano led the way offensivel­y with six goals and two assists and Maddie Green rounded out the scoring with two goals. SOUDERTON 12, HILL SCHOOL 6>> The Blues played well, but they were outmatched by a more experience­d team in the Beast of the East Tournament.

Co-captain Claire Alfano led all scorers with five goals and Megan Mikuan was solid in net with 11 saves and three steals. Hill ends the tournament with a 2-2 record.
