CALN >> Firefighters battled a garage fire Friday night that spread into the attic of a home and damaged one vehicle.

The Thorndale Fire Company, along with mutual aid, responded to the 500 block of Dogwood Lane in the Thorndale section of Caln Township for the report of a house fire. Numerous people reported the fire which broke out shortly after 7 p.m. Friday.

Thorndale Fire Chief John Cordisco said upon arrival firefighters saw heavy fire showing from the attached two-car garage and through the roof of the home. He said the fire spread from the attached garage into the common space in the attic of the one-story rancher. The fire also damaged an adjacent room where he said the crews were able to hold the fire to that area and there was little extension into the kitchen which sustained smoke damage.

“They made a very aggressive attack and a quick stop to it,” Cordisco said.

He explained that the radiant heat caused the vehicle in the driveway about 10 feet from the home to catch on fire. He added that the firefighters were unable to fully extinguish the vehicle fire at the time because a live wire fell on top of the jeep.

The homeowner was the only one home at the time and once he discovered the fire, he exited the residence and called 911, according to Cordisco. No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters.

“He discovered the fire early, he did the right and got out,” Cordisco said. “He is very fortunate.”

Knowing that there are no fire hydrants in the area, Cordisco called for additional tankers. The fire was placed under control at 7:51 p.m. and crews cleared the scene at 10:39 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Chester County Fire Marshal’s office.

Thorndale was assisted by Coatesville VA Hospital, Wagontown, East Brandywine, Westwood, Coatesville, Lionville for RIT (rapid intervention team). The tankers were provided by Keystone Valley Fire Department, West Bradford, Glenmoore, Po Mar Lin Lionville, and Minquas. Washington Hose Ambulance, Westwood Ambulance, Brandywine Hospital Medic 93 and Caln Township Police Department also responded.
