Plans for Maple Street Park upgrade move ahead
POTTSTOWN >> Plans to expand youth tennis programming at Maple Street Park got a boost this month from a unanimous vote by borough council.
Specifically, council approved a change to the agreement it has with Greater Pottstown Tennis and Learning for the construction of a covering for the tennis courts there.
The original plan, approved by council last summer, anticipated an inflatable “bubble” to be erected over the two courts, Greater Pottstown Tennis and Learning is refurbishing and the third new one they are building.
However, concerns about the noise the fan for such a structure would require, and the cost of the power to keep it running, and some other technical considerations have altered those plans.
Instead, the non-profit group now plans an enclosure with a rigid metal frame.
This will permit tennis programs to be run yearround.
According to a letter sent to park neighbors at the end of January by Parks and Recreation Director Michael Lenhart, there will be times when those courts will be open to public use, and when they will be used by Greater Pottstown Tennis and Learning for “youth fitness and education programs.”
Lenhart told council that during a public meeting with park neighbors Jan. 24, “no major concerns” were raised, although there are concerns about parking.
Construction of the courts, fencing and tree re-planting is planned to begin this spring.
