A Reading man at the shore on vacation drowned while attempting to save his 11-yearold son.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. >> A Reading man vacationing at the shore drowned Monday morning in Atlantic City, N.J., while attempting to save his 11-year-old son from drowning, Atlantic City police said.
Thanh Bui, 58, drowned in the ocean at the New Jersey Avenue beach, police said.
Authorities released his name Tuesday.
Bui was transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he died, police said.
His son also was transported to the medical center for treatment of undisclosed injuries, officials said. His identity and condition were also unavailable. According to police: At 9:32 a.m., Atlantic City police and first responders, including fire, beach patrols and emergency medical service patrols, responded to a report of a father entering the water to save a child from drowning.
The boy was having difficulty swimming in the ocean when his father went in the water to help but got caught up in the strong current.
Jim Glorioso Jr., a former police officer in Amsterdam, N.Y., reported that he witnessed the father struggling in the water.
Glorioso said he found Bui after he had gone underwater and that he attempted to pull the victim to shore on a boogie board.
The beach patrol unit was off duty at the time but responded from a nearby tent once they heard of the incident. Atlantic City Beach Patrol Chief Steve Downey was the first to respond.
Firefighters with the Atlantic City Fire Department immediately began to provide CPR to Bui, who was unresponsive.
