Sheetz’s craft brew is a hit with customers
Sheetz’s second craft beer sells out in less than a week
ALTOONA » It didn’t take long for Sheetz’s second craft beer — Project Brewberry Muffinz — to sell out at all 99 Pennsylvania locations where it was available.
The convenience store chain began selling the limited-edition blueberry craft beer on Thursday, Aug. 29. Customers experienced long lines, and in some locations, the product was sold out within hours. In less than one week — it was completely sold out, according to the company.
Nick Ruffner, public relations manager for Sheetz, said the company is “thrilled” by the customer reaction to the beer.
“We thought Project Brewberry Muffinz would be a major hit with our customers and were both excited and surprised when some locations sold out within one hour of going on sale,” he said in an emailed response to questions.
Project Brewberry Muffinz was brewed in partnership with Evil Genius Beer Company, of Philadelphia. A light-bodied blonde ale, the beverage is infused with Sheetz’s iconic Shweetz blueberry muffins.
“Our Shweetz blueberry muffins have always been a major hit with customers and brewing our muffins in beer is an idea we thought would resonate positively,” Ruffner said.
When it was released, the company said there would be no restocking. However, two western Pennsylvania Sheetz locations did receive a second supply on Friday, Sept. 6, due to customer demand.
Project Brewberry Muffinz was Sheetz second limitededition craft beer. Project Coffee Hopz was released in May 2019 — a beer blended with Sheetz Brothers Sumatra coffee beans. That brew was a collaboration with Rusty Nail Brewing Co. Project Coffee Hopz also sold out quickly — within a couple of
weeks according to the company.
Sheetz currently has no plans for additional specialty craft beers, according to Ruffner.
“However, we are always listening to our customers’ and brainstorming ideas that would interest them,” he said, adding that the success of the two beers demonstrates the importance of the company being innovative.
Established in 1952 in Altoona, Sheetz Inc. operates 585 store locations in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina. In the tricounty region, there are eight Sheetz stores located in Berks County.
