Spot of T - Embrace Your Imperfections

- By Terry Alburger Life Engagement Coordinator,

There was a great episode of “Star Trek” which really brought the concept of embracing your imperfections to life. The good crew of the Starship Enterprise encountered a robot named Nomad that was created years earlier to seek out “biological imperfections” and exterminate them. The creator of this project had died, and Nomad floated around in space alone, exterminating entire populations.

After it had killed several crew members aboard the Enterprise, Captain Kirk tried in vain to explain that no one was perfect. This was to no avail. He finally realized that the only way to defeat Nomad was to point out that it, too, was imperfect.

Nomad had mistaken Captain Kirk for its creator, a man with a similar name; therefore Nomad itself was flawed. Yes, I know, I revert to science fiction a lot, but there is truth in many of the concepts. The knowledge of its own imperfection ultimately led to Nomad’s demise.

Rather than beating ourselves up for our imperfections, I propose we embrace them. These “imperfections” are the core of our personalities, the quirks we have acquired over the years and are what differentiates us from one another. I am perfectly content to go home after work, kick off my shoes, and cuddle up on my couch. Do I put my shoes away? Nope. Do I throw my backpack and purse on the chair? You bet. I’m comfortable. This is who I am. Casual. Does that make me imperfect? You bet.

No one is perfect. No one. We all have flaws. I can absolutely laugh at my imperfections. I take pride in who I am, quirks and all. I believe these imperfections can be renamed “character,” a reflection of the core of our being. There are many reasons for our quirks; some are environmental, some are inherent. Whatever the case may be, I believe the most successful people in life are the ones who can look at themselves with a gleam in their eye, smile and accept themselves just as they are.

Remember the old “Mr. Rogers” shows? His message was one of universal acceptance of ALL people regardless of their looks, race, age, gender or health. I truly believe Mr. Rogers never met a person he didn’t like. I think the world would be a far better place if we all thought the way he did. He taught kids that no matter what, they were wonderful, just the way they were.

He taught the concept of embracing imperfections at a very young age. Mr. Rogers

changed lives, just by being himself. I think we can all take a lesson from him.

So, next time you feel less than perfect, embrace it! Give yourself a pat on the back and take credit for your individuality. You are interesting and unique,
