Route 422 closures planned in both directions
Eastbound and westbound Route 422 will be closed and detoured at night next week for various construction activities.
The construction is part of a project to improve and reconstruct 1.2 miles of Route 422 from just east of the Schuylkill River bridge to just west of the Montgomery County line, PennDOT announced. The work schedule is: • Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., westbound Route 422 will be closed and detoured from the Stowe Interchange to the split with Benjamin Franklin Highway. During the closure, westbound Route 422 motorists will be directed to exit at Stowe, turn left on High Street and continue on High Street until it merges with Route 422; and
• Thursday, Sept. 26, from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., eastbound Route 422 will be closed and detoured from the split with Benjamin Franklin Highway in Douglass Township, Berks County, to the Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) Interchange in North Coventry Township, Chester County. During the closure, eastbound Route 422 motorists will be directed to continue on Benjamin Franklin Highway/High Street and turn right onto southbound Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) to access the ramp to eastbound Route 422.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under this improvement project, PennDOT is reconstructing Route 422 on both existing and new alignments; reconfiguring the Route 422/ Stowe Interchange to a diamond configuration; removing and replacing the existing ramps and culverts; installing new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, message boards, signing, pavement markings, lighting, concrete median barriers, median glare screens and guide rail; upgrading stormwater management facilities and pipes; and constructing and restoring wetlands. The project is scheduled to be completed this fall.
