Two Hill medalists at Beast of the East

BEAST OF THE EAST >> The Hill School had a pair of medalists come out of the Beast of the East tournament on Sunday at the University of Delaware.

Sophomore Kelvin Griffin, in his first year at Hill and a native of Berwick, Maine, placed fourth at 126 pounds while Jake Craig placed sixth at 113 pounds.

Griffin went 7-2 for the tournament, working his way through five consolatio­n rounds to reach the medal round. He pinned Kingsway Regional’s McKenzie Bell in 2:09 to reach the consolatio­n semifinals, which he received a medical forfeit from top-ranked Robert Howard on Bergen Catholic. Griffin fell in the medal match to Elyria’s Dylan Shawver, 6-2.

Craig went 7-3, battling from after dropping into consolatio­n in the championsh­ip second round. He rattled off six straight wins to earn a medal, clinched by an 11-0 major of Caravel Academy’s Luke Poore. He fell 4-3 to St. Christophe­r’s Erik Roggie in the fifthplace match.

Also for The Hill School, Kade Davidheise­r went 2-2 at 106, Sam Beckett was 3-2 at 145, and Derek Schmaeling was 3-2 at 195.

Pope John Paul II was also in attendance. Matt Vulakh (132), Nick Togno (113) and Jacob Rau (195) each went 1-2.

BATTLE OF VALLEY FORGE DUALS >> Pottsgrove’s wrestling team was the class of the six teams participat­ing in the Battle of Valley Forge Duals Saturday at Upper Merion.

The Falcons went 5-0 in a field that included fellow PAC members Norristown and the host Vikings.

Pottsgrove’s sweep came against Upper Moreland (42-36), the Eagles (54-20), Upper Merion (71-10), Central Bucks West (5130) and Archbishop Carroll (786). Norristown (3-2) got its wins over Upper Merion (55-17), Archbishop Carroll (63-9) and Central Bucks West (55-23).

Charles Sithens (138), Josh Cerrito (152), Stephen Hennelly (160/17) and Zachary Van Horn (220) all went 5-0 on the day. Sithens, Hennelly and Van Horn

each scored four pins — Hennelly added a technical fall against Upper Merion — and Cerrito had three pins.

Isaiah Tucker was 5-0 for Norristown at 132. Sean Cawley (145) and Todd Picard (4-1) had 4-1 outings.

Upper Merion’s leading wrestler was Collin Power at 126.

Boys basketball

PERKIOMEN VALLEY 50, PHOENIXVIL­LE 47>> After building a big lead in the first half, the Vikings withstood the Phantoms’ late charge to hold on for the PAC divisional crossover victory

METHACTON 71, POPE JOHN PAUL II 56 >> The Warriors rode a strong third quarter on their way to victory over the Golden Panthers in Saturday’s PAC divisional crossover game.

Methacton was led by Erik Timko’s 31-point outing, which featured 12 points on shots from 3-point range, and Owen Kropp’s 14 points. Luke McCarthy (19), Jaden Workman (13) and Justin Green (10) were high for PJP.

Girls basketball

OWEN J. ROBERTS 63, UPPER MERION 29 >> The Vikings came out strong in the first quarter Saturday, holding the lead to only 9 but losing their momentum in the second quarter of this PAC divisional crossover game.

White and Leclaire had 12 points apiece for OJR, with Clay adding seven. UM’s top scorers were Skye Omoqui with eight points and Jenna Foster with six.

GREAT VALLEY 46, POTTSGROVE 35 >> The Falcons were unable to negate the Patriots’ early lead Saturday and fell short of their non-league guests.

Sydney Mowery scored 14 points to lead Pottsgrove, which took its first loss (7-1).
