Make it a ‘Souper Bowl’ party with these recipes
Area chefs offer a peek inside their playbooks, but if you don’t have time to cook, there are lots of take-out options.
The competition. The commercials. The soup. Yes, soup. Got a game plan for “Souper” Bowl Sunday? Area chefs offered a peek inside their playbooks, sharing three fumble-free recipes even a rookie can tackle.
“Some soup and some bread it’s just a nice wintertime meal,” said chef Chuck Smith of Wolff’s Apple House in Media. “It warms your house and makes your house smell good.”
His Curried Cauliflower Soup showcases a bountiful brassica. To go vegan, just substitute coconut milk, which “makes it very creamy and flavorful – all the things you look for in a good winter soup.”
Another surefire victory: Conebella Farm’s Easy Cheddar Beer Soup. Score a touchdown with award-winning cheese from Ayrshire cows in Elverson.
“It’s a tribute not only to our cheesemakers but also the milk our cows produce,” explained Don Gable, whose sharp cheddar took first place in its category and third overall at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. “It’s a good ratio of fat and protein for cheesemaking.”
Speaking of good ratios, Shrimp Ramen Noodle Soup balances shiitake mushrooms, ginger, baby bok choy and more.
“I love it because it is a meal in a bowl! And I love Asian noodle soups in general,” said chef Jenny Young of Soup. It’s Love in a Bowl and The Red House Catering in Kimberton. It’s “light but satisfying, full of flavor, fun to eat.”
No time to cook? Call an audible and carry out.
“We have chili and two hot soups throughout the winter,” Smith noted. “They’ll be plenty of quarts and pints for people to take home for the Super Bowl, for sure.”
