NORRISTOWN >> Recovery efforts continue more than a week after the remnants of Hurricane Ida came through the region.

In Montgomery County, an area hit hard by historic flooding and an EF-2 tornado, a shelter was set up at Norristown Area High School at 1900 Eagle Drive in Norristown.

“There are currently about 20 people still staying at the NAHS shelter,” according to Dave Skutnik, regional communications director for the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania.

There were approximately “130 overnight stays” at the shelter in Montgomery County as of Wednesday morning, according to Skutnik.

The Red Cross has worked to assisted residents in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties from Sept. 1-9:

• Provided 211 overnight shelter stays

• Served more than 3,000 meals and snacks

• Distributed nearly 2,000 flood clean-up kits and other relief items

• Helped more than 550 people with disaster recovery support

Skutnik added that “our teams have found the most damage and the most residents in need of assistance so far in Montgomery County compared to the other counties in our SEPA region.”

Red Cross personnel offered resources and information to those affected by the storms in Montgomery and Chester counties this week.

More than 150 Red Cross disaster workers from all over the country continue to work closely with local officials to help to assess the damage left behind and make plans for what support families may need.

Families are still struggling to cope with the devastation left behind by Ida.
