Susan (Sheaffer) Hess
Susan (Sheaffer) Hess, 83, wife of the late Ronald E. Hess, Collegeville, died Friday, September 10, 2021, in The Meadows At Shannondell, Lower Providence Twp.
Susan was born on June 4, 1938, in Philadelphia and grew up in Williamsport, PA. She was a 1956 graduate of Williamsport High School and 1960 graduate of Juniata College. Susan’s friend set her up on a blind day with Ron during her college years, and she quickly knew he was “the one”. They were devoted to one another for 57 years of marriage.
Susan spent her career as a teacher, first at Spring-Ford High School in Royersford, then at Newfield Central High School in Ithaca, NY, when Ron attended graduate school. Upon returning to Collegeville, Susan taught at Collegeville-Trappe High School before taking time off to raise her two sons. She returned to teaching as an aide at Montgomery Co. Intermediate Unit working with children with developmental differences for 25 years.
Susan was a member of Augustus Lutheran Church, Trappe. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, taking walks with Ron and their Belgian sheepdogs, and vacationing in Vermont. Susan loved nature and animals and enjoyed bird watching. She had a friendly and kind demeanor and was known for striking up a conversation with anyone she met.
Susan is survived by her sons, Stephen A. Hess, Collegeville, and David A., husband of Christine (Reiner) Hess, Catonsville, MD; and her grandsons, Caleb and Elijah Hess.
Susan’s memorial service will be a private family gathering to celebrate her life. Memorial contributions may be made to Augustus Lutheran Church, 717 W. Main St., Trappe, PA 19426. Arrangements are by Holcombe Funeral Home, Inc., Trappe.
