Saint Joe’s Benton earns A-10 Defensive POTW

•Saint Joseph’s junior Katy Benton (Methacton/Worcester) earned the Atlantic-10 Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week Award on Monday for her efforts in the Hawks’ Top 10 victories over No. 4 North Carolina and No. 8 Rutgers.

Alonging with anchoring a defense that held the two teams to combined three goals, Benton assisted on the game-tying and game-winning goals in the 3-2 victory over North Carolina. She has five assists this season to lead the A-10.

Hawks’ sophomore Kate Crist (Spring-Ford/Limerick)has appeared in four games for Saint Joe’s, including the 2-1 victory over Rutgers on Sunday.

• Drexel sophomore Liz Chipman (Methacton/Audubon) recorded her career goal in Friday’s 5-3 loss to Penn. Chipman played in 11 games for Drexel last season, recording two assists. She also added an assist in Friday’s defeat.

Teammates Emily Owens (Methacton/Collegevil­le) and Gabby Martina (Perkiomen Valley/Collegevil­le) have also seen action in all five of the team’s games. Owens has one goal on the season. • La Salle freshman Cristina Dougherty (Perkiomen Valley/ Schwenksvi­lle) also netted her first career goal Friday in the Explorers’ 4-3 win over Lehigh, knotting the game 1-1 after La Salle fell into an early hole.

Dougherty has carved her role in the Explorers’ lineup right away, starting all five games for La Salle. • Locals Bridget Guinan (Owen J. Roberts/Pottstown) and Liz Fox (Upper Perkiomen/Green Lane) have helped Rowan out to a 2-1 start in 2021.

Guinan has started all three games, tallying a goal and two assists, while Fox has come off the bench in three games to score a goal.

• Katie Dotterweic­h (Daniel Boone/Douglassvi­lle) finished with one save and earned the victory in the cage as fifth-ranked Kutztown, playing in its first game in Andre Reed Stadium since November of 2019, protected its house with three first half goals. It took down visiting Mansfield, 3-1. Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game.

Football

•Grove City senior quarterbac­k Josh Ehst (Daniel Boone/Douglassvi­lle) combined for four touchdowns in his team’s 48-15 win over Bethany on Saturday. Ehst completed 13 of 24 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for times for 23 yards and a score.

Ehst entered the season third all-time at Grove City in career passing yards and second all-time at Grove City in touchdown passes. On the season, he is 29-of52 for 561 yards and four touchdowns.

•Kutztown redshirt-junior wideout Jerome Kapp (Boyertown/Barto) caught six passes for 160 yards and a pair of scores in the No. 18 Cougars’ 29-26 loss to No. 15 Indiana University of Pa. on Saturday. Kapp’s 22-yard touchdown catch with with 3:45 to go pulled Kutztown within three, but the Cougars couldn’t pull out the comeback victory.

Kapp tallied 32 catches for 462 yard and five touchdowns in 12 games in 2019. In two games this season, he already has 10 grabs for 234 yards and three scores.

•Widener senior defensive lineman Mario Scotese (Perkiomen Valley/Trappe) helped the Pride to a 2722 win over Rowan in its season opener. Scotese recorded three total tackles (one solo, two assists) and added half a sack.

Scotese has 128 tackles in his career, including 23.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks. He was an All-MAC honorable mention in 2019 when he led the team with 6.5 sacks.

•Fifth-year senior QB Stephen Sturm (Perkiomen Valley/Collegevil­le) threw touchdown passes in each of the first three quarters Saturday, helping to stake Bentley University to a 3421 lead and the Falcons went on to defeat Assumption University, 40-21, in non-conference football at Brian Kelly Stadium.

On the third play of the game, Sturm hit graduate running back Andrew Brazicki on a screen, and the CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica took it the distance for a 69-yard touchdown and a quick 7-0 lead.

Sturm, who surpassed 6,000 yards in total offense for his career, completed 14 of 25 passes with seven different players on the receiving end. Junior Tajon Vassar was the leader in receptions with four, and Brazicki’s 69 yards was also a team best.

Men’s Soccer

• Starting senior midfielder Kyle Tucker (Phoenixvil­le) helped the Drexel men’s soccer team to its first two wins of the season last week with a 5-1 win over Saint Peter’s on Sept. 7 and a 2-0 victory over UNC-Wilmington on Sept.

11. Tucker had an assist in the 5-1 win as the Dragons finished the week 2-3.

Women’s Soccer

• Kylee MacLeod (Owen J. Roberts/Pottstown) of the eighth-ranked Kutztown University women’s soccer team netted the game-winner last Saturday at East Stroudsbur­g University and the junior defender was in the middle of a defense that earned two shutouts last week, earning her PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week honors.

MacLeod scored her first career goal in the 16th minute against the Warriors to put the Golden Bears (4-0 overall, 2-0 PSAC) on the board in the 4-0 win. MacLeod and the Kutztown defense, which also features Molly McHarg (Spring-Ford/ Limerick) kept both of their opponents off the board this week, also blanking Millersvil­le 1-0 last Wednesday night. Gabby Kane (SpringFord/Royersford) assisted on the winner against the Marauders. Kutztown is off to its best start to a season since 2017 when they won their first 13 games.

• Freshman midfielder Susanna Soderman (Hill School/Schwenksvi­lle) earned a starting place has started every game for the 6-1 Villanova women’s soccer team. She tallied an assist in a win over Delaware on Aug. 22.

• The St. John’s women’s team is off to a 4-1-1 start with the help of redshirt junior forward Kayla Mesaros (Pope John Paul II/Royersford). Mesaros has a pair of assists on the year.

• A handful of locals helped Shippensbu­rg to a winning week last week, including senior midfielder K.K. O’Donnell (SpringFord/Limerick), who netted a goal, assisted by high school teammate Allie Christman (Spring-Ford/Royersford) in the Raiders’ 2-0 win over Shepherd on Sept. 11.

The 1-2-1 Raiders also feature senior starters Julia Dalton (Owen J. Roberts/Pottstown), Mackenzie Mitchell (Spring-Ford/ Royersford) and Laura Fazzini (Spring-Ford/Phoenixvil­le), plus reserves Lee Eubank (Methacton/Collegevil­le) and goalkeeper Cassidy Skilton (Owen J. Roberts/Pottstown).
