Man charged in shooting at office building that killed guard
been charged in a shooting at a north Philadelphia office building that claimed the life of a security guard, authorities said.
Officers were called to the building in the Logan section of the city just before 11:30 a.m. Friday and found a man shot on the first floor. They were told that the offender was on the third floor, the location of administrative offices of Pathways to Housing, which provides services for the homeless.
Police found the suspect on the third floor armed with a large knife and took him into custody without incident. Witnesses said he had entered the third floor and discharged a firearm but no injuries there were reported. Three homemade guns were recovered along with two spent shotgun waddings, police said.
Authorities said the employee, 25-year-old Nassir
Day, was pronounced dead at the scene. WPVI-TV reported that a close friend, Marques Morris, who played football with Day, called him “a standup guy” who would do “whatever it takes to protect anybody.”
Wayne Dorylis, 59, who gave an address in Milford, Delaware, faces charges of murder, reckless endangerment and causing/risking a catastrophe as well as weapons offenses. A message seeking comment was sent to the Defender Association of Philadelphia, listed in court documents as representing him.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that a Pathways representative declined comment but referred a reporter to a statement Friday on the organization’s Facebook page that referred to apprehension of “an individual, who had previously made threats against our staff and participants and served time as a result.”
“This individual had not been in contact with Pathways in more than 18 months prior to today, and was never a participant in any of our programming,” it said. “We are both grateful that our staff and participants are safe, and full of grief to learn that a victim of today’s shooting has passed away. Our hearts go out to the victim’s family.”
