One of the oldest fields in the Boyertown Midget Baseball League, Mackey Field, is the first field that everyone sees when they enter Boyertown Community Park.

With all the improvements at the park, the League wanted to do its part in improving the community park and helping build a better Boyertown. Joining forces with the Boyertown Lions Club and Rotary Club, the League has been working on the design and plan for the Mackey Field Renovations Project for the past couple of years.

Starting in 2018, the Mackey family and the Boyertown Midget Baseball League began a campaign to turn Mackey Field at Boyertown Community Park into a first-class youth baseball stadium, the League recently announced in a release.

“The project is now taking shape, with drawings that show the planned final result. Completion of this project will provide a high-quality baseball environment for BMBL Senior Division teams and also help Boyertown to be able to host future local, state, and regional tournaments for those age groups.”

The field is named in memory of Donald “Ducks” Mackey, a long-time supporter, coach and officer with the Boyertown Midget Baseball League. He introduced many teams and ideas that are in place today. Mackey was the first coach of the now Junior Legion Bear Cubs and the first coach of the 12-year-old All-star Bambinos, now called the Black Bears.

Throughout his life, he was always involved in youth activities, not only baseball but also coaching Midget Mite football teams and Biddy Basketball. After his

passing, the oldest field at the Boyertown Pool was named in his honor.

“Over the years, many fields have been added and many upgrades made, making Boyertown Park a topnotch baseball complex,” the League said in a release.

A faithful lottery player, Mackey always told everyone, “First thing I would do is build a stadium for the kids, then enjoy what was left, if anything.”

“Now, we can be part of building a fantastic stadium that will be home to many local, state and regional tournaments,” said the League.

The goal of the renovations is to enable the league to use the field in a more efficient way and provide the community with access to the field. Field renovations include covered dugouts, expanded bullpens, expansion of the in-play area behind home plate, conversion to a grass infield, a new scoreboard, addition of ADA-compliant public restrooms, and seating behind home plate, among other improvements.

The infrastructure phase of the project is currently underway. The initial fencing and lights poles were removed. The new light poles have been delivered and will be set up soon. Work on the concession stand and electrical upgrades are already underway.

The project is scheduled to be completed by spring 2023.

To fund the project, the League applied for several grants, received private donations and worked on fundraising projects with the community, Boyertown Lions Club and Rotary Club.

Community members are encouraged to contribute to the project. To make a donation, go to https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_ id=RXXUBW2ZJ7BFN or mail a check with Mackey Field in the memo line to PO Box 34, Boyertown, PA 19512.
