Gordon Albert Istenes, 82, of Mock Road, New Hanover Twp., husband of the late Martha E. (Yost), passed on February 8, 2023 at Manatawny Manor after an extended illness.

Born in Pottstown, PA, he was the son of the late Mary (Walsh) and Albert Istenes. Gordon served in the United States Air Force as an electrical technician on F-101 aircraft and was stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB in Marquette, Michigan. He was a graduate of Pottstown High School and received his BA in 1968 from Ursinus College. He worked at Boyertown Body Works, Firestone Tire and Rubber, Ryder Truck, Pollock Auto Restoratio­n, and retired from Occidental Chemical, Pottstown. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Pottstown.

Surviving is a son Arthur Istenes, Pottstown; a daughter Anne Kennedy, Westervill­e, OH; one sister Joan (Chris) Austerberr­y, Pottstown. He also survived by his beloved grandson Alexander Kennedy, Bowling Green, OH and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. His sister Mary Ann (Istenes) Doering preceded him in death on February 5, 2023.

Gordon was an avid toy train and antique car enthusiast, and he enjoyed spending countless hours with his grandson looking for treasures at yard sales and flea markets. He enjoyed attending car shows and traveled extensivel­y to attend national car meets. He enjoyed good food and martinis, watching Antiques Roadshow, and relished in knowing all the answers in Jeopardy. He was a life-long learner and an avid reader and there was no topic that was off limits for his keen interests. He was an excellent cook and his goal in life was to eat Maryland out of blue crab and Maine out of lobster. He was a past assistant scoutmaste­r with Boy Scout Troop 79, Upper Pottsgrove, PA and went on numerous hikes and campouts with his son. He traveled extensivel­y and loved to share his adventure of rafting the Colorado River and then hiking to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon via Bright Angel Trail. He had a passion for the history of the greater Pottstown area and enjoyed sharing his knowledge at various historical society meetings.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 A.M. on Saturday February 18, 2023 at the Schumacher & Benner Funeral Home & Crematory, 359 King St., Pottstown. A visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
