Kids Artspace hosts grand opening
MIDDLETOWN>> A new handson, creative art studio held its official grand opening last week.
Kids Artspace, 955 S. Main St., was developed to stimulate children’s imaginations and innate artistic abilities. The grand opening event was attended by Middlesex Chamber of Commerce President Larry McHugh, Middletown Mayor Daniel Drew and Kids Artspace Director Tami Mendez, along with some young, local artists.
“I would like to thank Tami Mendez for hosting us at the grand opening and I wish her and her team nothing but success as they support artistically gifted students at this new Middletown establishment,” McHugh said.
Kids Artspace officially started at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year and offers a range of programs for children from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.
Mendez has said in a prior interview with the Press that the program is all about letting the children discover what they enjoy doing best and nurturing that passion.
The program was started with a grant from the Supporting Effective Educator Development initiative and is staffed by interns from local colleges, including Wesleyan University and Middlesex Community College.
Class offerings include drawing, painting, cartooning, still life, photography and creative writing.
“The kids are in charge of their own creativity and are encouraged to work independently,” Mendez has said.
