Alderman calls for Westville police substation

-

NEW HAVEN >> Alderman Darryl Brackeen, Jr., D-26, has submitted legislation requesting a police substation in Westville, because ofwhat he calls a “surge in criminal activity and incidences of violence,” in upper Westville, according to a press release.

Brackeen has asked the matter be considered at the Board of Aldermen’s Monday meeting. Brackeen’s release said hewould prefer a substation at Davis Street School.

There is currently only one police substation in Westville, West Hills District #2, which covers a large area, Brackeen’s release said.

“With the recent escalation of crime in the area, residents and Alder Brackeen believe that having police presence on both sides of the district by creating a satellite location at Davis Street School, or another suitable Westville location, will bring stability and greater safety to the community,” the press release states.

Brackeen said, “This year, our community experienced several home invasions, shootings, stabbings, car thefts, and muggings of long-time residents.”

Residents have shown their strong support for the measure through a petition that has already been signed by more than 100, the press release states. The alderman is urging residents to attend the public session of the meeting at 6:30 p.m., prior to the full board meeting.
