City woman to be honored at White House
Khadija Gurnah helped to enroll thousands in health care plans
MIDDLETOWN » A Middletown woman is being honored at the White House for her work helping to enroll people in health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act.
Khadija Gurnah is program manager for the American Muslim Health Professionals’ ACA outreach and enrollment efforts.
According to the White House, Gurnah helped the group launch the first national grassroots initiative of its kind in the Muslim American community. With a limited budget, AMHP mobilized 81 partners and with only seven on-the-ground organizers ultimately helped to enroll thousands of people in health plans.
Gurnah also forged newly formed relationships between clergy and civic leaders across religious, ethnic and racial lines, according to the American Muslim Health Professionals.
Gurnah earned her master’s degree in health management at Yale School of Public Health. She has worked in the community health field, focusing on how to address the inequities in health care delivery.
She is one of 13 “Champions of Change” scheduled to be honored Monday.
She has worked in community health, focusing on inequities in health-care delivery, and has published papers and articles on health care delivery to minority populations, according to the American-Muslim Health Professionals.
