The New York Giants have hired former Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew as their director of football operations/special projects.

NEWYORK >> The New York Giants have hired former Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew as their director of football operations/special projects.

The Giants announced the hiring, saying Mayhew will help assistant general manager Kevin Abrams on all aspects of the salary cap, CBA compliance and player contract negotiations. He will also handle special projects as assigned by general manager Jerry Reese.

The Giants had an opening in their front office after the departure of Matt Harriss, who recently joined the Lions as their vice president of football administration. Harriss had been the Giants’ director of football operations.

Mayhew, who played in the NFL for nine seasons, spent 15 seasons with the Lions. He was the team’s general manager from late 2008 until last November.

Raiders agree to oneyear

lease in Oakland

Four weeks after being stymied in their effort to move to Los Angeles, the Raiders agreed to a oneyear extension lease extension to remain at the Oakland Coliseum.

Raiders owner Mark Davis had been mulling multiple options to move his team since being passed over by the NFL’s other owners to relocate the Raiders to Southern California.

The St. Louis Rams were approved to move to Los Angeles in January, while the San Diego Chargers have an option to join the Rams.

The agreement with the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Joint Powers Authority guarantees that the Raiders will play the 2016 season in the same stadium they have called home since 1995. It also carries two one-year team options.

The deal still needs approval of the Oakland City Council and Alameda County Board of Supervisors.
