College students achieve honors
Eastern Connecticut State University
WILLIMANTIC >> Jessica Durkin ‘18, a biology major from Eastern Connecticut State University, was the recipient of a Toppers Education Fund Scholarship on Oct. 16 at the Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield.
The Portland native was among four Jewish college students who were awarded funds based on academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.
Durkin is the president of Hillel, an on-campus Jewish student organization; a member of the Biology Club and Repertory Dance Troupe; biology teaching assistant; resident assistant in a firstyear residence hall; community garden volunteer in Windham; and is participating in an independent study that investigates the effects of microgravity on neuronal functioning.
Georgia Southern University
STATESBORO, GEORGIA >> Georgia Southern University recently recognized more than 200 students on the summer 2016 semester president’s list, including Ashlei Dixon from East Hampton, who was honored for excellence in academics.
To be eligible, a student must have at least a 4.0 grade-point average and carry a minimum of 12 hours for the semester.
Hofstra University
HEMPSTEAD, NEW YORK >> Almost 400 students worked as volunteers in areas ranging from media and production to credentialing and ticket distribution during the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump at Hofstra University Sept. 26, including Kristen Dansereau of Cromwell.
Along with a month-long series of panels discussions, lectures and performances on election issues, the volunteer opportunity provided an educational experience that inspired students to engage in the democratic process.
