Mercy tops Amity, earns SCC tourney spot

MERCY 1, AMITY 0 >> At Middletown, junior Christiana Bevilacqua’s first half goal lifted the host Tigers to their third straight win and a berth in the Southern Connecticu­t Conference tournament. No. 8 Mercy, winners of five of their last eight games, will meet topseeded Cheshire in the first round on Saturday (10 a.m.) at Cheshire High School.

Kendall Castro had the assist on Bevilacqua’s goal, while Jessica Gaetgans preserved the shutout with eight saves for the Tigers (69). The Spartans fell to 8-8.

Girls soccer

PORTLAND 2, OLD SAYBROOK 1>> Mikayala Stefanski and Kelly Talerico had one goal apiece to lift the visiting Highlander­s (6-9-1) on Thursday. Julia MacKinnon stopped six shots for Portland, which is 4-1-1 in their last six games.

Maggie Smith scored for the Rams (8-3-5). CROMWELL 6, CAPITAL PREP 2>> Junior Jenna Serrantino scored four goals and Erika Person and Eliza Weston had one goal apiece to lift the host Panthers to a nonleague win on Wednesday. Cara Jordan and Liv Belcourt each had two assists for Cromwell (12-1-2).

Angelique Rodrigues scored both goals for the Trailblaze­rs (15-1).

Girls volleyball

MERCY 3, FITCH 2 >> At Middletown, senior Amy Boyle had 16 kills and junior Jess Carroll added 11 kills in leading the host Tigers to a 25-23, 25-19, 23-25 20-25 and 15-13 non-league win on Thursday. Meghan Fusco had 19 digs for Mercy (12-7).

Olivia Nordstrom had 30 assists and Nora Ryan had 13 kills for the Falcons (136) HADDAM-KILLINGWOR­TH 3, BACON ACADEMY 0 >> At Colchester, junior Kate Porter had 23 assists and five kills, while Sarah Porter and Sam Mohammed each had six kills to lead the visiting Cougars (19-2) to a nonleague sweep on Wednesday. COGINCHAUG 3, LYMAN HALL 1>> At Wallingfor­d, sophomore Bailey Zettergren had 33 digs and sophomore Lindsey Taylor added 11 digs and five aces to lead the Blue Devils to a 27-25, 25-19, 23-25, and 25-21 nonleague win on Wednesday. Coginchaug, winners of four straight, improved to 12-8.

Allie Tolla had five kills and five assists for the Trojans (8-12).

MIDDLETOWN 90, PLAINVILLE 81 >> The Blue Dragons (10-1) got first place individual performanc­es from Kim Shekosky (200 IM and 100 Backstroke), Jenny Hawkins (50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle), Kim Chambers (100 Butterfly), Cassie More (diving), and Kamila Ciebelski (500 Freestyle) to win their final dual meet of the season Tuesday at Plainville.
