Wesleyan drops NESCAC opener

Men’s basketball

HAMILTON 92, WESLEYAN 76 >> At Clinton, N.Y., junior forward Nathan Krill and sophomore guard Kevin O’Brien each scored 20 points, both career-highs, in the ninth-ranked Cardinals road loss on Saturday.

Krill also finished with 15 rebounds, while senior guard Harry Rafferty added nine points for Wesleyan (11-2, 0-2 NESCAC).

Andrew Groll led four players in double figures with 20 points to pace the Continenta­ls (10-2, 2-0 NESCAC). MIDDLEBURY 83, WESLEYAN 65>> At Middlebury, Vt., Matt St. Amour drained five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the host Panthers in the NESCAC season opener for both teams on Friday night. St. Amour and Joey Leighton sparked a late 11-0 first half run with a pair of 3-pointers, lifting Middlebury (10-1, 1-0 NESCAC) to a 40-27 halftime advantage.

Salim Green and Joseph Kuo netted 18 points apiece, While Harry Rafferty chipped in 13 points for Wesleyan (11-2, 0-1 NESCAC).

Women’s basketball

HAMILTON 48, WESLEYAN 46 >> At Middletown, the Continenta­ls rallied from a 16-point third quarter deficit to edge the Cardinals Saturday afternoon at Silloway Gymnasium.

Carly O’Hern led Hamilton (6-5, 1-1 NESCAC) with a 11 points, while sophomore Halie Serbent (Killingwor­th) tied a career best with a game-high 10 rebounds. Kendall Rallins gave the Continenta­ls the lead for good at 43-42 on two free throws with 5:30 left.

Tara Berger paced Wesleyan (5-7, 0-2 NESCAC) with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Olivia Gorman added 11 points and four steals. MIDDLEBURY 76, WESLEYAN 63>> At Middletown, Sarah Kaufman poured in a game -high 25 points, including 7-of-9 from threepoint range, to lift the visiting Panthers Friday night in a NESCAC season opener for both teams at Silloway Gymnasium.

Catherine Harrison notched a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds for Middlebury (92, 1-0 NESCAC).

Sophomore Tara Berger scored 19 points on 8-of10 shooting and also added five rebounds, while Maeve Vitale chipped in 11 points for the Cardinals (5-6, 0-1 NESCAC).

Men’s ice hockey

WILLIAMS 4, WESLEYAN 1 >> At Middletown, C.J. Shugart had two goals and an assist, while Stephen Morrissey stopped 15 shots to lift the Ephs (5-4-2, 4-2-2) in a Little Three matchup Saturday at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

Tyler Wyatt scored for the Cardinals (7-4-0, 3-3-0 NESCAC). WESLEYAN 3, MIDDLEBURY 2>> At Middletown, Walker Harris, Dylan Holze, and Theo Tydingco netted one goal apiece and the Cardinals held off the Panthers in a NESCAC matchup Friday night at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

Dawson Sprigings made 22 saves for Wesleyan (7-30, 3-2-0).

Trevor Turnbull and Mark McLellan each had a goal for Middlebury (0-10-1, 0-7-0 NESCAC).

Women’s ice hockey

WESLEYAN 4, COLBY 1 >> At Waterville, Me., junior Cici Frattasio notched a hat trick to lift the Cardinals to their third straight win Saturday at Alfond Rink.

Ellery Sarosi added a goal and Allegra Grant made 24 saves for Wesleyan (5-4-1, 2-2-0).

Grace Crowell’s first period goal gave the Mules (09-2, 0-5-1) a 1-0 lead. WESLEYAN 3, COLBY 0 >> At Waterville, Me., senior Abby Rutt scores two goals and freshman goalkeeper Allegra Grant stopped 27 shots to lead the visiting Cardinals (4-4-1, 1-2-0 NESCAC) on Friday at Alfond Rink.

The Mules fell to 0-8-2, 0-4-1 NESCAC.

Wrestling

WESLEYAN PLACES THIRD >> At Bristol, R.I., senior Devon Carrillo was crowned the 197-pound champion to lead the Cardinals to a third place finish in the Scott Viera Invitation­al on Saturday at Roger Williams.

Carrillo won a 13-6 decision over Cody Carrillo (Plymouth State) in the finals, to finish a perfect 3-0.

In addition to Carrillo’s first-place performanc­e, freshman Amir Daouk and sophomore Shane Ross ‘19 finished second overall at 125 and 141, respective­ly, for Wesleyan.
