Selfors, Mercy capture SCC West crown

NEW HAVEN » The Mercy indoor track and field team won the Southern Connecticu­t Conference’s annual Western Sectional meet Wednesday at the Flyod Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

The Tigers edged runnerup Hamden, 86-80, while Wilbur Cross placed third with 62 points.

Senior Bridgid Selfors paced Mercy by winning three events. Selfors placed first in the 1000 (3:05.82), 1600 (5:21.28) and 3200 (11:25.04).

Also for the Tigers, sophomore Madison Webster placed first in the 55 meter hurdles (9.95) and senor Mary Pitruzzell­o was the runner-up in the shot put (33-5.50).

On the boys side, Xavier placed third with 75 points. Hamden won the title with 124 points, while runnerup Wilbur Cross had 89 points.

Falcons sophomore Pierre Sylvain was the runnerup in the 600 (1:28.72), while junior Owen Lally placed second in the 1000 (2:43.65). Also for Xavier, sophomore Dillon Selfors placed second in the 3200 (10:32.90) and junior Jake Tristine was the runnerup in the pole vault (10-06). WESTBROOK 62, VALLEY REGIONAL 51 » At Deep River, Liam Bell and Cory Muckle each had 16 points to lead the visiting Knights (9-1) to a Shoreline Conference win on Thursday.

Colin Sparaco had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Brian Tonks chipped in 10 points for the Warriors (5-7), who trailed 3019 at halftime.
