Ädelbrook receives $5,000 trust fund grant
CROMWELL >> Ädelbrook has received a $5,000 grant from Thomas J. Atkins Memorial Trust Fund, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee. This grant will provide high quality and high durability communications tools for the youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder served by Ädelbrook.
Electronic devices such as iPads are known to help educate and improve communication for individuals on the spectrum, some of whom may be nonverbal. These tools fit into Ädelbrook’s Total Communication Plan, which is the use of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC), Sign Language and verbal production. Research has shown that total communication is successful in teaching both receptive and expressive language for individuals who struggle to communicate. A key component of this grant is in making sure that not only the staff are trained to use the equipment, but that the parents are also able to use it so they can transfer the skills from school to home.
This grant will help the youth within Ädelbrook’s Learning Centers and in their residential programs within Middlesex County. Ädelbrook is a multi-service agency specializing in behavioral and developmental services. It is dedicated to meeting the unique needs of families and individuals, of all ages, as they relate to intellectual/developmental disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
