$116,700 state grant boosts trail upgrades
MIDDLEFIELD >> A statewide trails system organization is the recipient of state funding that will help seven projects across Connecticut upgrade multi-use trails and greenways, according to a news release.
Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has awarded a total of $400,000 in grants for these projects to plan and design, build, expand or enhance and improve these outdoor recreation areas.
The Connecticut Forest & Parks Association, located at 16 Meriden Road in the Rockfall section of Middlefield, will use the $116,700 in funding to support the upcoming Blue Blazed Hiking Trail Maintenance & CT Trails Day in June. According to the CFPA: “Conservation trail crew will be used on large trail improvement projects that need much more than a weekend work party to address, advancing key educational and informational programs, volunteer training (including development of a video series) for all user groups, and trail maintenance of 825 miles in 96 Connecticut towns.”
The DEEP, which expects most projects being completed by spring, expanded the scope of its recreational trails Program under terms of Public Act 15-190, the release continues.
This legislation also expanded eligibility for grants so that nonprofit organizations are able to receive funds under this program, according to the release.
Following state Bond Commission authorization of funds last spring, DEEP’s Recreational Trails Program distributed $5.8 million in trails grants.
Funds received through this program may be used for locally supported trails and trail systems, bikeways and multiuse paths, according to the DEEP news release.
Grant money can be allocated for a wide variety of purposes, including planning, design, land acquisition, construction, construction administration, and publications for bikeways, walkways, and greenways as well as for equipment and trail amenities, such as parking lots, toilet buildings, signs and benches, the release concludes.
