Police: Shoeless man attempted to steal woman’s car

-

SHELTON » A Waterbury man who was not wearing shoes tried to carjack a woman outside a local dental clinic on St. Patrick’s Day, then lied to police about who he was, officers said in a report.

Gerardo Retamar, 37, was arrested and charged with criminal attempt to commit robbery involving an occupied vehicle, criminal attempt to commit firstdegree larceny, third-degree burglary, criminal impersonation, interfering with an officer and second-degree breach of peace.

A woman called the Shelton Police Department regarding a man attempting to carjack her vehicle in front of Family Dental at 169 Center St. The woman told police she was parking her car in front of the business when a man, later identified as Retamar, wearing a tank top, sweat pants and no shoes approached her.

Retamar opened her car door and attempted to get in and grab her keys, according to police. The woman began to scream and an employee of Family Dental came to her aid and Retamar fled the scene, police said.

A Shelton undercover officer was in the area at the time and Retamar was detained within minutes and taking into custody, police said. At first, he gave police a false name, but “his true identity was discovered after he was fingerprinted,” police said.

Retamar was given a Derby Superior Court date of April 7 and was released on $30,000 bail.
