Associate coach Miller moving on

Glen Miller, who had two separate stints on UConn’s coaching staff and helped lead the team to a pair of national championships, has left the program.

It’s not known whether the decision was Miller’s or whether he was forced out, though speculation has been rife since the end of UConn’s season that he was looking to move on elsewhere. He did not return phone calls on Saturday.

Miller served 14 years on UConn’s staff over two different, sevenyear spans. He returned to the school as Jim Calhoun’s director of basketball operations in 2010-11 after a rocky tenure as head coach at Penn. Miller became a full-time assistant coach under Calhoun in 2011-12, then moved up to associate head coach when Kevin Ollie took over as head man the following season.

“We appreciate the countless contributions Glen has made

UConn basketball, as a player, a coach and the associate head coach,” Ollie said in a statement released by the school. “His integrity, his dedication to the program, and his commitment to our studentathletes have been outstanding and he has had a huge role in the success we’ve achieved. I wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Miller played two seasons at UConn, then transferred to Northeastern to play for Calhoun. When Calhoun took over the reins at UConn in 1986, Miller was part of his original coaching staff until becoming head coach at Connecticut College in 1993. He served as head coach at Brown, then Penn, before returning to Storrs.

During his tenure with the Huskies, Miller was part of two NCAA championships, one NIT title, six NCAA tournament appearances and three conference tourney titles.

While it’s too early to speculate on Miller’s replacement, former UConn assistant Tom Moore is a possibility. Moore, who was fired after 10 seasons as Quinnipiac’s head coach earlier this month, is hoping to latch on to a program in the Northeast, most likely as an assistant.
