Vail goes distance as Xavier shuts out Branford

Joe Vail went the distance and struck out 11 to earn his first victory of the season as the Xavier baseball team beat Branford 2-0 in Southern Connecticu­t Conference action at Palmer Field Monday.

Vail allowed three hits as Xavier improved to 3-4. Branford fell to 4-3. HADDAM-KILLINGWOR­TH 11, VALLEY REGIONAL 8 >> Tyler Popp, Ross Meglin and Ben Alonzo all had two hits, while Meglin drove in three to lead the Cougars.

Owen Marica threw four innings of shutout ball while striking out seven for H-K (7-2), which scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to erase an 8-7 deficit.

Fletcher Suedemeir had two hits for Valley Regional (2-5) OLD SAYBROOK 5, HALE-RAY 3 >> Dan Cote picked up the win and Jack Colella the save for Old Saybrook (4-3), which scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Hale-Ray is 0-5. OLD LYME 7, PORTLAND 3 >> Griffin Powers hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to break open a one-run game and lead Old Lyme (7-0) to its Shoreline Conference win.

Austin White hit two solo home runs for Portland (5-3).

Softball

EAST HAMPTON 4, VALLEY REGIONAL 1 >> Lindsay Dickerman scattered six hits in a complete game victory while Jenna DeMartino and Sarah Vickery each had key sacrifice flies.

Despite being held to two hits, East Hampton took advantage of four errors to plate their four runs.

Addy Bullis and Abby Cunningham each had two hits for Valley Regional. HALE-RAY 7, OLD SAYBROOK 5 >> Skyler Rapuano was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Hannah Lemke tripled and drove in a run to lead Hale-Ray (7-0, 6-0 SLC).

Katrina Ceceri got the win to improve to 7-0.

Anna Joseph had two hits and scored twice for Old Saybrook (1-6, 1-5).

Girls lacrosse

MERCY 16 NORTHWEST CATHOLIC 4 >> Jordyn Masse and Meg McClellan each scored four goals, Ryan Miela added three and Mary Sposito added two to lead Mercy in Middletown.

Kate Richardson, Kylie McCarthy and Sage O’Leary also scored goals. Georgia Davis made four saves for Mercy.
