No discussion about changing dates on PGA Tour schedule
There have been no discussions between the PGA Tour and the Travelers Championship on moving to a different time on the schedule, according to Travelers tournament director Nathan Grube.
The tour and the PGA of America officially announced on Tuesday that the PGA Championship would move from August to May and the Players Championship
would return to March from May beginning in 2019. The moves were done to shorten the tour’s schedule, ending the FedExCup playoffs before the NFL season begins.
The Travelers Championship has been held the third week of June, the week following the U.S. Open, every year but one since taking over title sponsorship in 2007.
“It would have to be a major shift on what we’ve been told. I don’t anticipate that (the dates) changing in any way, shape or form,” Grube said.
No PGA Tour schedule has been announced beyond 2018, so there is no official word how any of the other tournaments will be affected. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said Tuesday that not all of the changes have been made and won’t be announced until some time in 2018.
Tuesday’s announced moves had been rumored for months and didn’t come as any surprise to Grube.
“The only conversations we have had (about moving) was with the 2016 season,” said Grube, referring to the move to the first week of August last year to accommodate golf returning to the Olympic Games. “We’re very happy having our tournament the third week in June.”
Travelers’ title sponsorship currently runs through 2024.
