Church to host national storyteller
OLD LYME — Nationally recognized storyteller Tom Lee will present his retelling of the biblical epic of King David at Saint Ann’s Parish in Old Lyme, CT on Sunday, March 18 at 4 p.m.
A professional storyteller for more than 25 years, Lee performs folktales, myths, and legends and for adult audiences and for children. This program, which is intended for an adult audience, is titled “Prophets & Loss: The King David Story.” The story recounts the very human struggles of King David during Israel’s evolution from twelve tribes into a single kingdom.
“We all know about David and Goliath,” Lee said in a statement. “This program reminds people that there’s much, much more to the story, both before and after that famous battle.”
Lee began telling traditional stories while living in London and Scotland, and there he developed a passion for research. Before telling a traditional story, he will trace its origins back in time for hundreds, sometimes even thousands of years. Retelling biblical stories, he says, has brought this research to a whole new level. As his research continued, he learned that these same ancient fragments contained some of the roots of the Bible itself.
This program was originally presented as a commission for the Blanton Museum at the University of Texas. Lee has also performed at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN, for BBCTV, The Metropolitan Opera Guild, NPR, The Yale Center for British Art and Olana Historic Site. Admission to the program is by donation. Free parking is adjacent to Saint Ann’s Church. For more information, email office@saintannsoldlyme.org or call 860-434-1621
