4 chosen as April students of month
MIDDLETOWN — Vinal Technical High School recently chose its April students of the month.
Administrators select recipients from among those students who work hard to keep their grades high and remain respectful and constructive during the school day, according to a press release from English teacher and Student of the Month Committee member Brian Oleksiw, school staff and faculty members.
A large pool of young people were nominated for the award. The following students have consistently shown themselves to be dependable, positive and hard-working throughout the course of the year, the release said.
Ninth-grader Michael Lee has a high 90 (close to 100) average in English class for the year.
“He is a voracious reader and has a sharp mind that quickly comprehends and solves most any problem sent his way. Beyond this, Mike is a good friend to his peers, and someone who will go out of his way to help anyone in class that needs assistance.
“Mike is a flexible, creative thinking student, and one who we are sure will go on to do great things here at Vinal,” staff wrote in his nomination letter.
Tenth-grader Tony Lemire already earned three math credits this year by completing Algebra II, Geometry and Pre-Calculus classes, and will earn a fourth credit in Trigonometry in early May, according to Vinal.
“Pre-Calc and Trig are both honors level courses, which makes this a truly remarkable achievement, one that is unique to only a very small handful of students. Tony’s hard work and focus is inspirational, and is the exact type of student that we like to honor with the student of the month recognition,” staff wrote in his nomination.
Eleventh-grader Riley McConnell has maintained a 100 average throughout the year in music appreciation. Her work on musicbased projects is focused, interesting and wellthought-out, according to Vinal.
“Beyond the academic success, Riley also has a great voice which will be on display at the spring concert. Her work, both creatively and academically, sets a great example for her fellow students, and this makes her someone that all teachers enjoy to have in class.”
Twelfth-grader Melissa Caldeira, who consistently puts forth 100 percent effort, “is very responsible in academics, always conscientious of having her assignments finished on time and she self advocates for herself if she needs to, according to the school.
“By standing up for herself academically, she is shows the excellent trait of independent thinking and self-reliance — both traits that teachers at Vinal try hard to instill in every student.”
