Connecticut captures New England Junior title

Inclement weather canceled Tuesday’s final round of the New England Golf Association Junior Invitational, therefore awarding Connecticut the team title. Connecticut led by 17 strokes after the first 36 holes played Monday at Longmeadow Country Club in Longmeadow, Mass.
Connecticut, which finished with a cumulative total of 11 over par, wins its first championship since 2012 and 16th overall. Massachusetts placed second at 28 over.
Ben James of Milford was the medalist, shooting a two-round total of 2-under 138, two strokes better than Middlefield’s Chris Fosdick.
Jackson Fretty (Greenwich CC) was tied for third (1-over 141), Connor Belcastro of Norwalk was tied for 10th (145), Matt Doyle of Madison CC was 14th (147) and Alexander Gu of Darien finished 23rd (152).

John Abbott shot a 3under-par 69 Tuesday to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the 33rd Connecticut Public Links Championship at Timberlin GC in Kensington.
Abbott, who plays out of Timberlin GC, leads Eric Bleile (Sterling Farms GC in Stamford) by one and three other golfers by three. Kyle Nolin, the 2016 champion out of Tallwood CC in Hebron, Chris DeLucia (Norwich GC) and Josh Cameron (Norwich GC) all shot even-par 72.
James Sheltman from Alling Memorial GC in New Haven and Peter Tomlinson from Orange Hills CC lead four golfers tied for sixth at 73.
WOMEN’S AMATEUR
Tuesday’s opening round of the 53rd Connecticut Women’s Amateur was suspended at Hartford GC because of inclement weather. None of the players completed their round.
The plan is still to complete the 54-hole tournament by Thursday.
