St. Lawrence University
CANTON, New York — Simona Mazzotta of Middletown is participating in a St. Lawrence University off-campus study abroad program during the fall semester in Italy. Mazzotta is a member of the Class of 2020 and majoring in psychology. Mazzotta attended Mercy High School.
Boston University
BOSTON — Boston University awarded academic degrees to 1,859 students in September. Among the graduates was Reem Telmesani of Middletown, who received a doctor of philosophy in chemistry.
Western New England University
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — The Western New England University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society welcomed close to 200 students at the annual induction ceremony Oct. 19, including Brandon Asika Etuka of Middletown, who is majoring in health sciences; Gabriel Fletcher of Cromwell, a mechanical engineering major; Christopher Westbrook of East Hampton, who is studying mechanical engineering; and Taylor Winkler of Cromwell, an accounting major.
In other WNEU news, two local students were selected as peer advisors for the 2018-19 academic year: Katherine Bials of Portland, who is working toward a bachelor of science degree in neuroscience; and Westbrook, who is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering.
This is a highly select and comprehensively trained team of students dedicated to helping firstyear and transfer students in their transition to the college. Each first year student is assigned a peer advisor, who serves as a source of information, point of first contact, and conduit to university programs and support services. These advisors work the summer and academic year to assist new students in the formation of their personal success plan and act as an advocate for student success. The personal success plan provides a framework for establishing specific, measurable, attainable, reasonable, realistic and timely goals for the first semester.
Coastal Carolina University
CONWAY, South Carolina — Zak Gardiner, a finance major from Portland, is a Wall Fellow in Coastal Carolina University’s Class of 2020. This is a two-year program that prepares top students across all majors for high-level careers in major U.S. and international organizations.
The highly selective leadership development program is designed to supplement students’ regular academic coursework. Along with coursework, the program also consists of a combination of individual reading and studying, developing a personal mission statement and resume, professional internships, leadership training, project execution and characterbuilding opportunities.
Students are chosen through a rigorous application process in the second semester of their sophomore year, which starts with a detailed written application and includes three different levels of personal interviews. The program provides members one-on-one career and personal coaching to prepare them for their desired career and/or internship.
Fairleigh Dickinson University
