CIAC moves soccer, field hockey finals to Sunday

- By Joe Morelli

The CIAC state championship finals for both boys and girls soccer and field hockey have been moved to Sunday due to Thursday’s snowstorm.

Gregg Simon, the CIAC’s associate executive director, said there were no guarantees the facilities being used would be cleared in time for games to be played Saturday.

“After speaking with the sites, we were assured the facilities will be up and ready to go with the forecast for (Saturday),” Simon said. “It will be 47 degrees and sunny Saturday. We’d love to pay our championship games on that day, but we are dealing with the situation that confronts us.”

Simon also said teams likely not practicing either Thursday or Friday factored into the decision, to give teams Saturday to prep for the finals.

The only site Simon said wasn’t sure if it could be ready for play Sunday was Fairfield Warde High. So the only game that moved was the Class LL girls soccer final, featuring FCIAC finalists Ridgefield and Staples, to West Haven High at 3 p.m., following the Class M final between Plainfield and Lewis Mills at 12:30 p.m.

The Class L final between Tolland and Farmington is now 3 p.m. at Veterans Stadium in New Britain. The Class S championship game between Immaculate and Old Lyme is now 5:30 p.m. at Middletown High.

Preceding the Class S girls game will be a pair of boys finals at Middletown: Class S, Morgan vs. Old Saybrook at 12:30 p.m., followed by Class L, Hand vs. Maloney at 3. Veterans Stadium has the other two finals: Class LL, Hall vs. Glastonbury, at 12:30 p.m. and Class M, Ellington vs. Plainville, 5:30 p.m.

All of the field hockey finals will stay at Wethersfield, just the times have been readjusted. The Class L final, Staples vs. Cheshire, starts the day at 12:30 p.m., followed by Class S, Immaculate vs. Granby Memorial, at 2:30 p.m. andd Class M, Sacred Heart Academy vs. Guilford, at 4:30 p.m.

The CIAC girls volleyball finals at East Haven and the State Open swimming championship meet at Yale University remain on as scheduled for Saturday. joseph.morelli @hearstmediact.com; @nhrJoeMorelli
