CROMWELL — Santa Claus will make an early visit to Cromwell Saturday, courtesy of the Cromwell Fire Department.

The annual daylong Santa’s Run, which begins at 9 a.m. and continues until about 5 p.m., serves two purposes, a fire department spokesman explained.

First, using holiday decorated emergency vehicles, members of the fire department will escort Santa around town. Santa and his firefighting elves have promised to visit every street in town, handing out candy canes to both the young and the young at heart, Fire Chief Michael Terenzio said.

It’s an effort that “takes a lot of planning on the part of the fire department,” he said.

The other part of the run involves helping to make the upcoming holiday all it can be for residents in need of assistance, Deputy Chief Michael Salonia explained. To that end, firefighters “will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for the Cromwell social services department as well as canned food for the town’s food bank and gift cards to help with the food bank,” Salonia said.

As the brightly decorated emergency vehicles begin their drive down a street, residents take out their donations, be they food, toys or gifts, and hand them over to the firefighters. “There are many groups that hold toy and food drives to help out the community. The department is just trying to do its share,” Salonia said.

Santa’s Run “could not be possible without the generosity of our community. When you hear the sirens of the fire trucks and ambulances in the community on Saturday, please come out to meet Santa and members of the department,” he said.
