Scary future for seniors
Yikes, the reality of the future for all of us could certainly render seniors somewhere beyond depressed with the state of care for the elderly. It seems if we do not stay healthy and self sustaining, we are put in places that are not necessarily looking after our best interests.
I am well past the age of “retirement,” but work three full days a week hoping to stay self sufficient and keep my home. I don’t know the percentage of people my age who are still working, but it has to be climbing every year. The positive side is I like what I do and feel it keeps me sharp, but what if I can’t?
I am grateful for what I have, but afraid if I do get sick what in the world will happen to me. I occasionally look at the obits and see people who are living to be 90-plus and wonder who is taking care of them and to what level of proper care. For all of us who are “elderly orphans” it presents an even bigger worry.
Clearly, the care of those who cannot care for themselves needs improvement, but who is going to make sure that is done? Always read your column and many thanks for your observations and insights. Maggie Gibson Westbrook
