Applicants sought for Sal Salafia award

Initiated in 1997, the Sal Salafia Community Award, a $1,000 scholarshi­p, is awarded to a graduating Middletown secondary school student who has demonstrat­ed excellence in community service in Middletown. Applicants must include a detailed descriptio­n of their service, how they have been changed by it, and why they should be recognized — in an essay no longer than 750 words.

A brief letter must accompany the essay from a senior representa­tive of the organizati­ons from the community service organizati­on, along with a letter of recommenda­tion from the school guidance counselor, and signed by the parent or guardian. Students must have maintained a 3.0 (B) average and provide a grade transcript.

Students from Middletown High School, Mercy High School, Vinal Regional Vocational Tech or Xavier High School may apply.

Applicatio­ns must be received by April 15 and sent to Shirley Salafia, 54 Linbert St., Middletown, CT 06457.
