College students earn accolades

Paul Smith’s College

PAUL SMITHS, N.Y. — The following area students were named to the dean’s list at Paul Smith’s College during the fall 2018 semester: Nicole Distasio of Clinton, majoring in sustainabl­e communitie­s and working landscapes, and Lydia Harvey of Old Saybrook, majoring in biology.

Each earned a semester average of 3.3 or higher to receive this distinctio­n.

U.S. Air Force

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Ford D. Gagnon graduated from basic military training recently. He is the son of Susan Gagnon of Rocky Hill and is a 2013 graduate of Cromwell High School.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Those who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

University of Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Katherine Izadi of Old Saybrook, along with 10 groups and about 100 participan­ts, took part in the University of Vermont’s Alternativ­e Spring Break program.

This is a student-led, weeklong program that provides UVM students with an opportunit­y to travel and involve themselves in service work focused on a number of social issues in communitie­s throughout the nation.

Izadi traveled to Roanoke, Va., to work with Renovation Alliance, which brings volunteers and communitie­s together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners.

Three Rivers Community College

NORWICH — Three Rivers Community College announced the following residents made the fall 2018 dean’s list. Students earn their place by receiving a 3.4 or higher grade-point average based on a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Eryn Bosworth of Ivoryton, Rachel E. Bulgini of Clinton, Meghan C. Carden of Middle Haddam, Laurie A. Irving Gardner of Haddam, Matthew A. Kerkes of East Haddam and Tucker Minor of East Hampton.

Boston University

FARMINGTON, Maine — Middlesex County residents were recently named to the dean’s list at Boston University for the fall semester: Sydney Y. Crute, Blake A. Levitts and Victor X. Zhou, all of Cromwell; Alexander Stephan of Durham, Yiqing Li of Middletown, and Michael L. Baker and Emma R. Shiring, both of Deep River.

Students generally must attain a 3.5 gradepoint average (on a 4.0 scale), or be in the top 30 percent of their class, as well as carry a full course load as a full-time student to be recognized.

Zhou also received a bachelor of science in business administra­tion and management, summa cum laude, in January.

Western New England University

SPRINGFIEL­D, Mass. — Brandon Asika S.C. Mbanugo Etuka received the Excellence in Health Science Award at the 2019 Senior Awards April 25 at Western New England University. The award is presented annually to the health sciences graduating senior who has demonstrat­ed excellence across the curriculum.

Etuka is graduating with a bachelor of science in health sciences.

Clark University

WORCESTER, Mass. — The following local students received a degree from Clark University May 19: Robin C. Baldwin of Killingwor­th graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in political science and theatre arts. William Frederick Hawkins of Middletown graduated with a master of science in biochemist­ry and molecular biology.
