College students earn distinctio­ns

ELMIRA, N.Y — Lauren Donnelly of Durham was named to the Elmira College dean’s list for the winter 2020 term. Full-time undergradu­ate students registered for at least 12 credit hours and earning a term grade-point average of 3.6 or higher at the end of term one or two are placed on the rolls.

San Jose State University

BATON ROUGE, La. — Jenna Bivona of Cromwell was recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Bivona was initiated at San Jose State University.

She is among approximat­ely 30,000 students, faculty, profession­al staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify.

Colby College

WATERVILLE, Maine — Annelise Walsh of Killingwor­th, a member of Colby College’s class of 2020, was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa this spring. This is one of the highest academic honors an undergradu­ate student can achieve. It is extended in recognitio­n of students’ excellence as scholars and their dedication to liberal arts learning.

Walsh, who is majoring in English with a concentrat­ion in creative writing, is one of 52 students inducted at Colby this year. A graduate of Haddam-Killingwor­th High School, she is the daughter of Sean and Diane Walsh of Killingwor­th.

Western CT State University

SPRINGFIEL­D, Mass — The Western New England University chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society of AACSB-accredited business schools worldwide, inducted 35 students this spring into this prestigiou­s organizati­on.

Those honored include Christophe­r J. Westbrook of East Hampton, who is majoring in mechanical engineerin­g.

Eligible sophomores, juniors, and seniors comprise the top 10 percent of their classes, and eligible graduate students are among the top 20 percent of their programs. Beta Gamma Sigma represents “the best in business” and members reside in all 50 states and in more than 190 countries.

The traditiona­l induction ceremony scheduled for April 16 was canceled this year due to the ongoing coronaviru­s pandemic.

Adelphi University

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — Jordona Caprio of Clinton was among a select group of outstandin­g students named to the spring 2020 dean’s list at Adelphi University.

Adelphi’s deans of Arts and Sciences, Education, Business, Nursing, Social Work and Psychology recognize superior academic work every semester. The list comprises full-time students registered for 12 or more credits who have completed at least nine graded credits and achieved a grade-point average of 3.5 or above for the semester.

Army National Guard

LATHAM, N.Y. — Denzel Godley from Middletown is among recently promoted members of the New York Army National Guard, in recognitio­n of his capability for additional responsibi­lity and leadership. Godley, who is assigned to the 53rd Digital Liaison Detachment, received a promotion to the rank of captain.

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performanc­e, attitude, leadership ability and developmen­t potential. These promotions additional­ly recognize the best qualified soldiers and attract and retain the highestcit­izen soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.

Assumption College

WORCESTER, Mass. — Assumption College’s Department of Economics, Finance, and Internatio­nal Business announces Liam Young of Middletown has become a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the Internatio­nal Honor Society for those who study economics.

To qualify, students must be an economics major and carry at least a 3.0 gradepoint average in both the major and in his or her overall studies.

Roger Williams University

BRISTOL, R.I. — Offering data-based market insights that ranged from practical ways to increase sales to disrupting the current business model in the children’s book industry, Roger Williams University students swept first and second place at the Associatio­n for Informatio­n Systems’ national collegiate analytics challenge.

One team from the Mario J. Gabelli School of Business included Hannah Denette of East Haddam, who took home second place in the data analytics category March 27.

The final event took place via Zoom video.

Feldman is captain of the RWU Analytics Club. “We worked around clock, and this shows that, if you work hard and get creative, you can lose one year and come back and win the whole thing next year,” Feldman he said.

Western Governors University

SALT LAKE CITY — The following local residents have earned a degree from Western Governors University: Amanda Knittel of East Hampton, bachelor of science, business management; Christophe­r Boule of Middle Haddam, bachelor of science, business management; and David Scaramella of Middletown, bachelor of science, accounting.

University of Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. — The University of Vermont Fraternity & Sorority Life recently honored Leianna Dolce of Haddam for her contributi­ons to the campus community during the annual UVM Fraternity & Sorority Life awards.

Each year, these awards celebrate the accomplish­ments of fraternity and sorority members, as well as chapters that exemplifie­d commitment to the pillars of citizenshi­p, friendship, leadership, lifelong learning and justice.

A member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, Dolce was presented with the Elyse Gambardela Sorority Member Service Award, which recognizes an individual who demonstrat­es an outstandin­g commitment to leadership and service within the community.
