State Rep. Phipps among ‘Emerging Legislative Leaders’
Four-day talk will be led by professors from the University of Virginia
MIDDLETOWN — State Rep. Quentin Phipps, D-Middletown, was chosen to participate in the 2020 Emerging Legislative Leaders Program, a joint effort of the State Legislative Leaders Foundation and the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business Administration, along with several other partners.
The initiative is made possible through scholarships given to selected participants, according to a press release.
“As my desire is to serve my constituents in the most effective manner, I submitted my application to participate in this program, and am extremely excited to have been selected,” Phipps said in a prepared statement.
Since 2005, the EELP has chosen up to 50 state legislators nationwide to take part in a four-day classroom discussion led by a team of professors at the Darden School to better equip them with up-to-date resources so they can better serve the communities they represent, the news release said.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s class will be held via Zoom from July 6 to 9.
“I am grateful and honored that the speaker of the house recommended me, and encouraged me to participate in this nonpartisan, nonprofit program dedicated to mentoring new legislators who have been identified as future leaders,” Phipps said.
Phipps serves on the Executive and Legislative Nominations, Finance, Revenue and Bonding, and the Government Administration and Elections Committees. He also co-chairs the legislative Connecticut Main Street Working Group.
