Food & Wine magazine names Neil’s Donuts as state’s best
Neil’s Donuts of Wallingford, which recently opened its second Connecticut location in Middletown has been named the best doughnut in the state by Food & Wine magazine.
The “Best Doughnuts In Every State” list, released Feb. 5, honors the best fried pastries from across the country, from Boston cream and cider classics to beignets and malasadas.
In Connecticut, “Neil’s has some of the best old fashioneds in the region, crispy wheels of perfection, and filled doughnuts so generously portioned that sometimes they don't even bother with the pastry bag, slicing into the fresh yeast bombs before slathering them with cream and jam,” writer David Landsel noted.
“Come fall, a magical pumpkin spice cake and preserve-filled, cinnamon sugar-dusted apple will make you forget all about every average cider doughnut you've ever tried.”
A former salesman, Neil Bukowski began making doughnuts two decades ago, after being continually unsatisfied with the ones he’d pick up for meetings. He opened the Wallingford shop in June 2001, and he and his son Rob opened the Middletown location with a drive-through in late October.
Other Northeastern honorees included Congdon’s Doughnuts in Wells, Maine; Donut Dip in East Longmeadow, Mass.; Muriel’s Donuts in Lebanon, N.H.; Glaze Donuts in New Jersey; Paula’s Donuts in western New York; Allie’s Donuts in North Kingstown, R.I. and Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury, Vt.
Food & Wine recently published a list of America’s best sandwiches, naming the hot lobster roll at Noank’s Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough as the pick for Connecticut.
